Montero Lamar Hill (born April 9, 1999), better known as Lil Nas X, is an Atlanta, Georgia-based rapper, singer, and songwriter. He is best known for his country rap single “Old Town Road,” which went viral as part of the TikTok video sharing app’s “Yeehaw Challenge.” “Old Town Road” peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 after debuting at number 19 and was controversially removed from the Hot Country Songs chart.
Lil Nas X began his internet career as a Twitter personality. He rose to prominence through his Nicki Minaj fan account, “NasMaraj,” which was named after Minaj’s given name, “Marat,” and rapper Nas. Lil Nas X rose to prominence in 2015 thanks to his viral tweets and other fanpage, “FactsAboutNM.” “NasMaraj” was famous in 2017 for its interactive “scenario threads.” TweetDeck, a dashboard application, popularised these threads on Twitter.

With literally no money to promote the song, the rapper used silly memes to promote it, which helped the track chart on Apple Music and triggered an onslaught of label deal offers that he described as “terrible,” mostly because they were focused on the song rather than him.
