When healthcare company Columbia/HCA broke out a number of hospitals in 1999, LifePoint Hospitals, Inc. of Brentwood, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville, was formed. Scott Mercy, a rising star who had worked for HCA since the 1980s and rose through the ranks to become a senior vice president at the merged Columbia/HCA, was named chairman and chief executive, while James Fleetwood, Jr., who had served as Columbia/head HCA’s of operations for Florida, was named president and chief operating officer.
LifePoint appeared to be on the verge of making a big breakthrough in the healthcare industry, but Wall Street wasn’t thrilled. Because of the company’s financial difficulties, top LifePoint executives were offered ownership in the new company. “This management team is willing to bet their house basically on the success of the operating plan…. I’m willing to put my money where my mouth is,” Mercy told Modern Healthcare on December 6, 1999. Mercy put about $3 million of his personal money into the company, then spent another $200,000 on stock before the year was up.
By the end of its first year, LifePoint had opened its first new facility, the $32 million Bartow Memorial Hospital in Bartow, Florida, which replaced a 74-year-old facility. With almost 120,000 square feet of space, the new hospital was a dream come true for the town of Bartow in Polk County, which has a population of less than 15,000 people. LifePoint also closed two underperforming hospitals and began rebuilding its other 20 hospitals (excluding Bartow), resulting in $515.2 million in revenue for the year.
