Lewis Hamilton Wiki/Bio
Lewis Hamilton was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England on January 7, 1985. His father, Anthony Hamilton, is black and of Grenadian descent, and his mother, Carmen Larbalestier, is white, so Hamilton is mixed-race. Hamilton’s parents split when he was two, and he spent the next twelve years of his childhood with his mother and older half-sisters, Samantha and Nicola. Hamilton then lived with Linda, his stepmother, and Nicolas, his half-brother, who is also a professional race driver. Hamilton grew up as a devout Catholic.
Hamilton came second in the national BRCA championship versus adult opposition the next year. Hamilton faced racial violence when he was the only black boy racing at his club. When Hamilton was six years old, his father purchased him a go-kart for Christmas and vowed to sponsor his racing career if he worked hard in school. To better support his children, Hamilton’s father quit his position as an IT consultant and became a builder, doing up to four jobs at a time, including double glazing sales, dishwasher duties, and setting up estate agent signs while still attending his son’s races. Hamilton’s father went on to found his own IT business. He remained Hamilton’s boss until the beginning of 2010.
Hamilton attended The John Henry Newman School in Stevenage, a voluntary aided Catholic secondary school. Hamilton began karate at the age of five to protect himself from abuse at school. In addition to running, he was a member of his high school’s association football team, which included Ashley Young, a future England international. Hamilton, an Arsenal supporter, said that if Formula One had not worked out for him, he would have pursued a career in football or cricket, having participated in all sports for his high school teams. He started his studies at Cambridge Arts and Sciences (CATS), a private sixth-form college in Cambridge, in February 2001.
Hamilton had an on-again, off-again relationship with Nicole Scherzinger, the lead singer of the American girl group Pussycat Dolls, from November 2007 to February 2015.
Career
Hamilton started karting in 1993 and soon climbed to the top of the cadet division, winning races and championships. He became the youngest driver to win the British cadet karting championship two years later, at the age of ten. At the Autosport Awards that year, Hamilton asked McLaren Formula One team leader Ron Dennis for an autograph and said, “Hello there. Hello, my name is Lewis Hamilton. I won the British Championship, and I want to race your cars one day.”
Hamilton’s auto racing career started in the British Formula Renault Winter Series in 2001, where he finished fifth in the standings. As a result, he competed in the entire 2002 Formula Renault UK season with Manor Motorsport, finishing third overall. He stuck with Manor for another year, finally winning the championship over Alex Lloyd. Hamilton missed the last two races of the season after winning the title to make his debut in the British Formula 3 Championship season finale. He was pulled out of the first race due to a puncture, and he crashed out of the second and was admitted to the hospital after colliding with teammate Tor Graves.
Following the departure of Juan Pablo Montoya to NASCAR and Kimi Raikkonen to Ferrari, Hamilton’s performance in the GP2 championship coincided with a vacancy at McLaren. After months of uncertainty on whether Hamilton, Pedro de la Rosa or Gary Paffett would partner defending champion Fernando Alonso in 2007, Hamilton was named the team’s second driver.
Hamilton travelled to Havana with UNICEF in August 2017 to learn more about the organization’s first support programs in Cuba. He joined up with the charity campaign #TOGETHERBAND in 2020 to support the UN’s 17 Global Targets. Hamilton talked to students at Alperton Community School in North West London on the value of education as part of his initiative.
