Les Brown was born on February 17, 1945, in Wesley, Liberty City, a low-income suburb in Miami, Florida, with his twin brother. Mamie Brown, a 38-year-old single woman who worked as a cafeteria attendant and domestic assistant, was his adoptive mother. Brown argues that in primary school, he was branded “educable mentally impaired,” which hurt his self-esteem and trust.
In 1995, Brown married Gladys Knight. They split in 1997, and he has publicly mentioned it since hosting his shows. Calvin, Patrick, Ona, Ayanna, Tayloria, Thad, Sumaya, Serena, and John-Leslie are his nine children. He is also the grandfather of 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Career
According to many of Brown’s interviews, he was consistently unsuccessful while attempting to get into public radio. He wasn’t hired full-time until after the previous afternoon DJ’s on-air struggles. Following his resignation from the radio station, he ran for and won election to the Ohio House of Representatives.
He changed his profession to television after leaving the Ohio State Legislature and becoming a PBS anchor. From 1982 to 1988, Brown served on the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors. He received the Council of Peers Award for Excellence from the National Speakers Association in 1989, and the Golden Gavel from Toastmasters International in 1994.
In September 1993, he premiered The Les Brown Show, a modern talk show. On December 3, 1993, it went on hiatus for almost four months, and King World Productions replaced it with Rolonda, hosted by Rolonda Watts, on January 17, 1994.
Brown founded Les Brown Ventures Inc. to promote his work as a motivational speaker, and from 2011 to 2012, he anchored a weekday syndicated radio show on KFWB in California. Brown worked with John C. Maxwell on “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” a candid glimpse at the lives of professional speakers.
