In 1960, the Raiders joined the American Football League (AFL), which later merged with the NFL in 1970. The Raiders were founded in 1960, filling a position in the newly created AFL that had been left vacant when the unnamed Minneapolis club broke its contract with the AFL and joined the NFL, one of several failed attempts by the old league to undermine the AFL’s success. The Raiders were given a spot in the league and inherited their first-round draught picks, and the city of Oakland was given a spot in the league.

The Raiders battled on and off the field throughout their first three seasons. Al Davis was hired as head coach and general manager in 1963, and the team only had seven losing seasons from 1963 to 2002. They won one league championship (1967), three division titles (1967, 1968, 1969), and competed in one Super Bowl as members of the AFL (II). When he first joined the NFL, it was during the lean years.

Career

Eddie Erdelatz, a native of San Francisco, was chosen as the Raiders’ first head coach after a successful collegiate coaching career in the 1950s The Raiders, who were supposed to play in January 1960, were rescheduled. There were 28 rookies on the Raiders’ 42-man roster in 1960, with only 14 veterans.

Center Jim Otto, a future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, and quarterback Tom Flores, a future Raiders head coach, were among the Raiders rookies. The Raiders had a 6–8 record in their first season under Erdelatz in 1960. Erdelatz battled an ulcer caused by frequent confrontations off the field. The organisation was unable to sign any top draught picks the following season due to ownership problems.

Erdelatz was fired on September 18, 1961, after the Raiders were outscored 99-0 in the first two games of the 1961 season. Erdelatz retired from football in May 1962 and accepted a position as an executive with a California financial organisation.

He had surgery to remove a tumour on October 27, 1966, after a routine physical. After the Raiders fired Eddie Erdelatz on September 18, 1961, management named Marty Feldman (football coach), a native of Los Angeles, as the team’s new head coach.

The squad concluded the 1961 season with a 2–12 record under Feldman’s leadership. Feldman took over as Raiders head coach for the 1962 season, but was sacked on October 16, 1962, after a 0–5 start. From October 16, 1962, till the present, The Raiders then named Red Conkright, an Oklahoma native and assistant coach, as their new head coach.

The Raiders’ single win under Conkright came in the final game of the season, and they finished the season with a 1–13 record. Conkright was named temporary coach by the Raiders following the 1962 season. Conkright died on October 1, 1980, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 66.

The Raiders’ first, second, and third quarterbacks were all Raiders. Following the 1962 season, Raiders General Partner Wayne Valley appointed Al Davis, a former San Diego Chargers assistant coach, as head coach and general manager. He was the youngest player in NFL history to hold those positions at the age of 33.

Davis began implementing what he called the “vertical game,” an aggressive offensive style based on West Coast offence development. Davis led the Raiders to a 10–4 record and was voted AFL Coach of the Year in 1963. Despite a 5–7–2 record in 1964, the club rallied to an 8–5–1 record in 1965. Davis left the Raiders in April 1966 after being designated AFL Commissioner. The league announced its merger with the NFL two months later.

The job of commissioner was no longer required after the merger, therefore Davis took over. Davis returned to the organisation as a part-owner on July 25, 1966. He became the team’s third general partner — the partner in control of football operations — after purchasing a 10% interest in the team for US $18,000. In 1966, the Raiders mirrored their record from the previous season, however they were unable to make the playoffs.

Davis’s team, which he had assembled and coached, steadily improved on the field. The Raiders won the 1967 AFL Championship with John Rauch (Davis’ hand-picked successor) as head coach, defeating the Houston Oilers 40-7. The victory qualified the club for Super Bowl II, where they were defeated by Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers 33-14. John Madden was hired as the Raiders’ sixth head coach in 1969, and during his tenure, the team became one of the most successful in the NFL, earning six division titles in the 1970s.
