Khalid Donnel Robinson was born on February 11, 1998, in Fort Stewart, Georgia, to a single mother, Linda Wolfe, who worked as a supply technician in the military for over ten years.
His parents divorced when he was very young, and when he was in second grade and living in Germany with his mother, his father was killed in a car accident. His mother later retired from the military as a Sergeant First Class from Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.
His mother, who aspired to be an R&B singer in the 1990s, performed with a US Army band after joining the military due to family issues and frequently practised duets with him at home.
After returning from Germany, the family relocated to New York, where he participated in school musicals, portraying Cornelius in ‘Hello, Dolly!’ and Seaweed in ‘Hairspray.’ His musical talent brought him fame, but it also made him a target of bullying.
He finished his senior year of high school at Americas High School in El Paso, Texas. He considered becoming a music teacher at first, but began writing and recording songs in high school and uploading them to his Soundcloud page. ‘Saved’ and ‘Stuck On You’ were two of the first songs Khalid uploaded to the internet. He managed to contact producer Syk Sense and secure an invitation to work with him in an Atlanta studio, eager to release another song before prom.
He first worked on the song in Atlanta, then returned to El Paso, and released ‘Location,’ which became his breakthrough single and earned him multiple platinum certifications from the RIAA.
In January 2016, he appeared on Alina Baraz’s single “Electric.” In December of that year, he collaborated with Brooklyn-based duo Brasstracks on the track ‘Whirlwind’ from Yours Truly and Adidas Originals Songs from Scratch, which received over 700,000 SoundCloud plays.
In January and February 2017, he embarked on his first headlining tour, the ‘Location Tour,’ visiting 21 cities across the United States, Canada, and Europe. He sold out all 25 tour dates, including El Paso’s Tricky Falls, which has a capacity of 1,500 people.
Following the conclusion of the tour, Khalid released his debut studio album, ‘American Teen,’ on March 3, 2017.
Kendrick Lamar’s uncredited vocals were featured on the promotional song ‘The Heart Part 4’, which was released on March 24, 2017. The following month, he collaborated with Alessia Cara on Logic’s single ‘1-800-273-8255,’ which became his highest charting single, peaking at No. 3 on the ‘Billboard Hot 100.’
On March 15, 2017, he made his first television appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,’ performing the song ‘Location,’ backed by ‘The Roots.’ On April 27, 2017, one of his songs, ‘Angels,’ was featured in the episode ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ of the ABC drama series ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’

His most recent single, ‘Love Lies,’ which he recorded with Fifth Harmony’s Normani Kordei for the soundtrack of the upcoming drama film ‘Love, Simon,’ is set to be released on March 16, 2018.
Khalid debuted at No. 2 on the ‘Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists’ chart in July 2016 and was named one of the top ten new artists to watch in 2017 by several publications, including ‘Billboard,’ ‘Yahoo,’ and ‘Rolling Stone.’
In 2017, he was named ‘Best New Artist’ at the ‘MTV Video Music Awards,’ as well as ‘Woodie To Watch’ at the ‘Woodie Awards.’ He was nominated for several other awards that year, including the ‘BET Awards,’ ‘Teen Choice Awards,’ ‘American Music Awards,’ and ‘Soul Train Music Awards.’
