Kat Bjelland Wiki/Bio

The singer, songwriter, musician and guitarist Katherine Lynne Bjelland is an American. Her name was Babes in Toyland, which she created at Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1987. In 1987, she became a major lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter. She was recognized for the extraordinary vocal style, comprising alternately of harsh screaming, whispering, and speech, as well as her style of guitar playing that includes “jagged” tones with “psychotic rockabilly rhythms.”

Born in Salem, Oregon, Bjelland grew up in nearby Woodburn and, shortly after her high school graduation, learnt to play guitar as a teenager from her uncle, with whom she played in her band. When she was nineteen years old, Bjelland moved away from Oregon University to Portland, where she took part in the punk music scene. There she became friends and founded the Pagan Babies band with Courtney Love. Bjelland moved back to Minneapolis, where Babes formed in Toyland with the drummer Lori Barbero, following a dissolution of Pagan Babies in 1985. The first record of the band, Spanking Machine, was released in 1990, and they went with Sonic Youth to Europe. The second album, Fontanelle, was followed (1992).

In 1995, the band would release Nemesisters, their third studio album. In the late 1990s, Bjelland worked alongside her husband, the Australian musician Stuart Gray, to contribute as a bassist in the Crunt band. Babes formally broke out in Toyland in 2001, and Bjelland began to work with Katastrophy Wife, a project that issued Amusia (2001) and All Kneel records (2004). Katherine Lynne Bjelland (born Higginbotham) was born on 9 December 1963 in Salem, Oregon. She is of German and English heritage. Bjelland was raised to age 3, when her mother separated and gave him full custody and raised her as her own, by her mother and sire, Lyles Bjelland. Her biological father was not made known to her until she was eighteen years old; she met him until she was 23 years old. Bjelland remembered the realisation, ” a strange thing. “Huh, I’ve been like? Have I got another father? Aren’t I Norwegian?!’

In Woodburn, north of Salem, Byelland was brought up and described as “predominantly Orthodox Russians and Hispanics; hence, white [was] more like a minority… We lived on the outskirts of the city, so behind us was a wildlife.” She subsequently wedded Bjelland’s step-father, after which she claims that his wife tortured him both physically and verbally. “You know, because now she’s lovely, I hate to talk about her, but she has been quite abusive during my infancy,” Bjelland remarked.

“My inventiveness however undoubtedly helped a great deal. I’ve been grounded always. I hate to talk about it because I feel she don’t think she did it, but she [abused] and my life was pretty much changed.” As a young youngster, Bjelland got interested in music and began to listen to rock & roll recordings. She fell in love with Rush while she was a teenager and participated in four concerts. Career

David Higginbotham, Bjelland’s Uncle, taught her young guitar. Her first show in Woodburn was Flight 99 at a little bar, playing with the band named Neurotics with her uncle. She attended High School Woodburn, and she was a cheerleader and played on the school basketball team. Bjelland was briefly enrolled at the University of Oregon after graduating from high school in 1982, but dropped out at the age of nine and moved to Portland at the time. Bjelland worked as a stripper to support herself at this time.

After attending a Wipers event in Portland, she exposed herself to punk music: “I didn’t know too much about punk rock,” she recounted. “I’ve been of a little city. Suddenly I’ve been like, ‘What is the fuck?'” Bjelland bought her first guitar at age nineteen from a pawn shop, a Rickenbacker 425, for $200. She joined The Neurotics in Woodburn, followed by a whole female band, the Venaray band that Bjelland dubbed a “rock at the edge of the 60’s.” The neurotics are Bjelland, their uncle David Higginbotham (head of the guitar), Marty Wyman (vocals), Brian McMillan (droms) and Laura Robertson The Neurotics are made up of Bjelland and Laura Robertson (bass).

The term comes from the Latin word venary, meaning “to hunt for sex energetically!” We started out with each other as a method to have fun.” The band was not completely female, though, as drummer Dave Hummel and later Jack Rhodes were male. Bjelland met Courtney Love in Satyricon, a nightclub of the Portland, after leaving the Venarays in 1984 and the two launched a band named Sugar Babydoll. In 1985, drummer Suzanne Ramsey and bassist Jennifer Finch migrated to San Francisco and then joined the ensemble.. It was the least thing I ever did with music.” The band was inspired by the San Francisco Bay area’s Frightwig, a female band. When Finch departed the group, the Pagan Babies became renamed and Deirdre Schletter and Janis Tanaka presented themselves and released in December 1985 a four-track demo before it was disbanded. In the hope of building a new band, Bjelland moved to Minneapolis from Portland in 1986 and soon after met a barbeque bartender Lori Barbero. Although Barbero didn’t have a musical training, she persuaded Barbero to play as a drummer in her band. Barbero agreed to establish Babes in Toyland, with the pair joined with Bass player Michelle Leon. “Lori didn’t know how to play when I met her,” Bjelland stated, she purposefully sought out musicians who did not have an instrumental experience. Michelle did not know how to play. Michelle did not know how to play. I’ve been autodidactic.

She then went to the New York city of Brooklyn and provided the album Songs of the Witchblade, a composite compository track for the comic book of the Top Cow in 1997. Most of her songs, alongside various rock and metal bands, were developed, played and producted, like Megadeth and Peter Steele (Type O Negative), as well as a free-form project called the Latest Frenzy in Britain. Around 1999, with her former spouse, Drummer Glen Mattson, Bjelland gave birth to a son, Henry.

In the rest of the decade Babes in Toyland kept a fair follow and in November 2001 he performed in Minneapolis for a farewell gig. In 1998 Bjelland launched the Katastrophy Wife band in Toyland as a side project with her then-husband Drummer Glen Mattson, and performed infrequently only at the end of the 90’s. Bjelland made and supplied guest vocals on the album “The Seven Year Itch” for the band Angelica in 2002, after Babes had dissolved in Toyland. Bjelland hired the drummer and bassist for an upcoming European tour following that very collapse of the band. The new band was named Babes in Toyland, which led to the threat of Barbero and eventually to the removal of the name of Bjelland. Later, Bjelland asserted that, under the guise of Babis in Toyland, Kurt Pagan-Davies, a manager she worked with during that period, was responsible for part of his choice. She then acknowledged the stealing of money from her albums Amusia and All Kneel by Katastrophy Wife.
