Kamala Harris, full name Kamala Devi Harris, is the 49th vice president of the United States in President Joe Biden’s Democratic administration. She was the first African-American and the first woman to occupy the position. She formerly served in the United States Senate (2017–21) and as California’s Attorney General (2011–17).
Her father, a Jamaican professor at Stanford University, was a cancer researcher, as was her mother, the daughter of an Indian ambassador.
She went on to work as a deputy district attorney in Oakland from 1990 to 1998, where she earned a reputation for severity in prosecuting gang violence, drug trafficking, and sexual abuse cases. Harris worked his way up the ranks, eventually becoming the district attorney in 2004. She was elected Attorney General of California by a razor-thin margin of less than 1% in 2010, making her the first female and African American to hold the position.
She displayed political independence after taking office the next year, rejecting pressure from President Barack Obama’s administration, for example, to settle a nationwide case against mortgage lenders for unlawful conduct. Instead, she pressed California’s case and secured a five-fold increase in the original offer in 2012. Her unwillingness to defend Proposition 8 (2008), which outlawed same-sex marriage in California, aided in its repeal in 2013. Smart on Crime (2009; coauthored with Joan O’C. Hamilton) was hailed as a model for addressing the issue of criminal recidivism.
Career
Harris rose to global prominence after delivering a stunning speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2012. She married attorney Douglas Emhoff two years later. She was recruited to run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Barbara Boxer, who was retiring, and was widely seen as a rising star within the party.
Harris announced her candidacy in early 2015, and during the campaign, she advocated for immigration and criminal-justice reforms, as well as hikes in the minimum wage and the protection of women’s reproductive rights. In 2016, she handily won the race.
Harris became the first Indian American and only the second Black woman in the Senate when she assumed office in January 2017. Among other things, she began working on the Select Committee on Intelligence and the Judiciary Committee. Republican senators chastised her for her prosecutorial style of interrogating witnesses during sessions, which drew their ire—and occasional interruptions.
She gained notoriety in June for her questions to US Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was testifying before the intelligence committee about potential Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election; she had previously called for his resignation. The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, Harris’ memoir, was released in January 2019.
