Kali Uchis was kicked out of her parents’ house at the age of 17 for repeatedly violating her curfew.She lived in her car for months, staying with friends when she could and working in a grocery store to make ends meet.
Her rebellious streak first caused issues two years ago, when she began skipping class to spend time making experimental short films and working on her music.It makes the lyrics to the first song on her new album, Isolation, all the more fitting.It’s more than a boast; it’s a promise, one that’s fulfilled by the flurry of ideas she presents over the next 50 minutes.
The album effortlessly transitions between soul, bossa nova, reggaeton, Cumbia, bedroom pop, and elastic funk, all wrapped in Uchis’ sun-baked, jazzy vocals.It reflects her open-minded attitude toward music, which began with her father’s job.
“So my father would occasionally bring me small boxes of CDs. That’s how I discovered Kenna [Zemedkun, an Ethiopian-American musician], and there was a super-weird, almost demonic band called Cerar.”I’m pretty sure they were casting a curse on me, but I’d still listen to it.”Kali purposefully sought out the unusual and obscure – the more bizarre, the better.
Her musical curiosity fueled her own songwriting to the point where she is wary of singers who stick to a single style.”Having just one aesthetic or one thing you sing about is a little gimmicky,” she declares.Kali Uchis, as you may have noticed, exudes confidence.
She’s also funny, smart, and friendly, but she has the hard-won determination of a woman who has had to fight for her place in the world.
Karly-Marina Loaiza was born in Virginia and raised in her parents’ native Colombia before fleeing to the United States in 2000 due to violence.
Her parents and four older siblings were joined by a rotating cast of relatives who’d come from Pereira to find work, so her home life was often chaotic.
On the properties her father managed, her father would hire them as cleaners and construction workers. When money was tight, he’d enlist the help of his daughter as well.
“I was caulking and putting up dry drywall,” she explains. “Construction and auto-mechanic repairs were something we all did, me, my brothers, and everyone else.”Hard work was not a problem for me.”

“I wrote 17 songs in one night,” she says. “I didn’t think anyone was going to hear it.”However, her lo-fi mixtape, Drunken Babble, piqued the interest of Snoop Dogg, Gorillaz, and Tyler, the Creator, who invited her to appear on their albums.
Career
Her subsequent singles, Ridin’ Round and Know What I Want, have received over 10 million views on YouTube. However, the singer remained outside of the mainstream.It usually didn’t bother her.
“Numbers are deceiving,” she says. “Some of these people who have hit songs are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to have their songs played on the radio every five minutes – but they can’t sell out the venues that I can.”My fans will always be there for me. They don’t care about me because I have a hit song.”Those fans kept her going during the three-year process of recording her debut album.
They’re all over her Instagram, leaving thousands of comments as she posts pages from her notebook and brace updates alongside the usual parade of selfies and concert footage.”To connect with them on a personal level, rather than just showing them the parts you want them to see.”
Is her openness, however, compatible with her professed desire for privacy? After all, her album’s title is Isolation, and one of her previous singles has the refrain, “I’d rather be a loner.””I frequently give my phone to my assistant, and she notifies me if there is a text message that I need to respond to.”It has the potential to be both addictive and distracting.”
Instead, she devotes herself to her career, not only making music but also styling photo shoots and directing videos. In other words, she’s creating her own universe. On Body Language, she sings, “There’s no tracking where I’m going.”
