In 1808, Juliette Gaudin was born. She was a nun and an Afro-Cuban teacher. She is a Cuban-born humanitarian who has dedicated her life to helping the poor, the elderly, and people of color.
In 1842, she worked with Henrietta Delille to found the New Orleans, Louisiana, congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family. On January 1st, 1888, Juliette Gaudin passed away.
Henriette Delille, a free woman of color from New Orleans, Louisiana, founded the Sisters of the Holy Family twenty years before the American Civil War and before it was legal for such a congregation to exist. They were Juliette Gaudin and Josephine Charles, who founded this African-American women’s religious society.
Henriette, Juliette, and Josephine defied the prevailing social norms of their period by refusing to follow in the footsteps of their female forebears. These women, on the other hand, decided to obey God’s calling. It was through these acts of service to others that they were able to follow Jesus’ example of selfless service to those in need.
Sisters of Holy Family have been serving the young, elderly, and the destitute for more than 170 years in the spirit of their founders and early predecessors. Besides the people of New Orleans, the Sisters have helped a large number of individuals in cities all around Louisiana; Texas; California; Washington D.C.; Oklahoma; Alabama; Florida; Belize; and Panama; as well as the people of Benin City, Nigeria; and other parts of the world. Career
Numerous important events have occurred during the community’s history and have been documented. The date of the community’s founding is listed as November 21, 1842. Adult and child catechism sessions were held in 1843. The Society of the Holy Family was created in 1847 by a group of free men and free women of color to provide moral and financial support for the Sisters. Henriette, Juliette, and Josephine exchanged their first vows in St. Augustine Church on October 15, 1852.
The Sisters cared for the orphans in 1853 when the epidemic left many children homeless. St. John Berchmans’ Orphanage was officially opened in 1892. Mother Austin Jones bought 123 acres in Gentilly for $10 an acre. St. Mary’s Academy, St. Paul the Apostle Church and School, House of the Holy Family, Delille Inn, Lafon Day Care Center, Lafon Nursing Facility of the Holy Family, and the current Motherhouse were all founded on the foundation of this 1906 purchase. The cause for the canonization of Henriette Delille was initiated in 1988.
