As in Händel’s Alcina, she is able to show great power but also exalts in roles of lightness and humour, as the heroines in Rossini’s comedies. She has also performed Mozart roles such as Cherubino, Donna Elvira, and while she has left Verdi and Puccini, Berlioz, Bellini and other contemporary composers such as Jackie O’s Grace Kelly and Jake Heggie have also performed (Sister Helen in Dead Man Walking). Her recital repertoire includes a series of works, ranging from trade duets to Spanish songs, Fauré’s Mélodies and Bernstein’s and other American songs. DiDonato records on Virgin Classics, EMI, Hyperion, Naxos, Avie, Archiv and TDK are available.

DiDonato was born in Prairie Village, Kansas, on 13 February 1969. She studied with the intention of teaching voice at Wichita State University. In 1992 she graduated from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and became interested in her career and studied further training in Opera Companies in San Francisco, Santa Fe and Houston.

DiDonato was a host of successful contestants including a win at the 1998 George London contest after which she made her major debut at Katerina Maslova’s Tod Machover’s Resurrection at the Houston Grand Opera (1999). Her spectacular debut at La Scala was followed by Angelina at La cenerentola in Rossini, in 2001 by her amazing Rosina (the Barber of Seville in Rossini’s) at Opéra Bastille, and by her sensational debut at the Glyndebourne in 2003 as Fox in Janácek’s The Cunning Little Vixen.

The first major trade recordings by DiDonato were soon highly acclaimed: the 2005 Radamisto EMI, the 2007 Floridante Archives and the 2009 Alcina Archives. DiDonato made her Met debut in 2005, singing the Cherubino in Mozarts The Marriage of Figaro and continuing her 2006 debut in Madrid’s Teatro Real as the Composer in Richard Strauss’ Ariadne on Naxos to international auditions. Virgin Classics recording in 2009 from DiDonato, Furore, with driver Christophe Rousset, always drew amazing reviews while climbing high on the sales charts. DiDonato slipped on the stage and broke her fibula during Mozart’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, performed in July 2009, then completed the other five shows from a wheelchair.

One of her numerous appearances in 2015 was a civil activist at New York City’s gay bar Stonewall Inn, where her concert honoured victims of gay hatred crimes. She won her second Grammy Award in the following year, this time in Joyce & Tony: Live at Wigmore Hall. A collection of arias entitled In War & Peace was published in 2016. In 2019, DiDonato released the versatile Songplay that paired jazz, Latin and tango rhythms with Italian Baroque Arias and Great American Songbook selections, the Great American Songbook which won the Grammy Gramy Album 2020.

She won the Grammy Award for her album Diva Divo for Best Classical Vocal Solo in 2012. She sang in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda the same day, first in Houston, then resumed the role at the Met in 2013. DiDonato performed a great deal at the Last Night of the Proms in the United Kingdom during September of that year, and was named “Perspektives” for the 2014-2015 season in Carnegie Hall, leading to the colleges in the English Concert led by Harry Bicket, the Brentano String Quartet, and the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Maurizio Benini.

She received the Outstanding Apprentice Artist Award in 1995, following her apprenticeship at Santa Fe Opera. Other awards and honorary achievements were soon followed by: the Second Prize at the 1996 Eleanor McCollum Competition, the District Awards winner of the National Auditions of the Metropolitan Opera House in 1996, the Sullivan Prize in 1997, the Second Prize at the 1998 Opera Competition in Placido Domingo, the Second Prize of the 1998 Stewart Award, and the Richard F. Gold Career Grant at the Shoshana Foun. In 2003 she received the Richard Gold Debut Award from the New York City Opera and in 2006 the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Singer Award.
