DiDonato was born in Prairie Village, Kansas, on 13 February 1969. She studied with the intention of teaching voice at Wichita State University. In 1992 she graduated from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and became interested in her career and studied further training in Opera Companies in San Francisco, Santa Fe and Houston.

Her spectacular debut at La Scala was followed by Angelina at La cenerentola in Rossini, in 2001 by her amazing Rosina (the Barber of Seville in Rossini’s) at Opéra Bastille, and by her sensational debut at the Glyndebourne in 2003 as Fox in Janácek’s The Cunning Little Vixen.

Career

The first major trade recordings by DiDonato were soon highly acclaimed: the 2005 Radamisto EMI, the 2007 Floridante Archives and the 2009 Alcina Archives. DiDonato made her Met debut in 2005, singing the Cherubino in Mozarts The Marriage of Figaro and continuing her 2006 debut in Madrid’s Teatro Real as the Composer in Richard Strauss’ Ariadne on Naxos to international auditions. Virgin Classics recording in 2009 from DiDonato, Furore, with driver Christophe Rousset, always drew amazing reviews while climbing high on the sales charts. DiDonato slipped on the stage and broke her fibula during Mozart’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, performed in July 2009, then completed the other five shows from a wheelchair.

One of her numerous appearances in 2015 was a civil activist at New York City’s gay bar Stonewall Inn, where her concert honoured victims of gay hatred crimes. She won her second Grammy Award in the following year, this time in Joyce & Tony: Live at Wigmore Hall. A collection of arias entitled In War & Peace was published in 2016. In 2019, DiDonato released the versatile Songplay that paired jazz, Latin and tango rhythms with Italian Baroque Arias and Great American Songbook selections, the Great American Songbook which won the Grammy Gramy Album 2020.

She won the Grammy Award for her album Diva Divo for Best Classical Vocal Solo in 2012. She sang in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda the same day, first in Houston, then resumed the role at the Met in 2013. DiDonato performed a great deal at the Last Night of the Proms in the United Kingdom during September of that year, and was named “Perspektives” for the 2014-2015 season in Carnegie Hall, leading to the colleges in the English Concert led by Harry Bicket, the Brentano String Quartet, and the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Maurizio Benini.
