Joni Kay Ernst, an American politician, was born on July 1, 1970, and has served as the junior United States Senator for Iowa since 2015. She served in the Iowa State Senate as a Republican from 2011 until 2014.
Ernst was considered a “long shot” at the outset of her 2014 Senate race, but she was buoyed by Koch brothers backing and a nationally aired ad in which she cited her experience castrating pigs and promised to “eliminate pork” in Congress. She has been labelled as a solid ally of President Donald Trump, and was speculated to be a prospective running mate in his 2016 campaign, despite her harsh criticism of President Barack Obama.
Ernst opposes legalised abortion and has presented legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and support a foetal personhood amendment. She is against the Affordable Care Act and has advocated for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security reforms. She has expressed alarm about Trump’s trade conflict with China, but not outright rejection, and has opposed several areas of his foreign policy. Despite her support for both Trump’s EPA nominations, she has raised reservations about their commitment to the Renewable Fuel Standard. On climate change, she denies the scientific consensus. Ernst has looked to accept the idea that states can override federal laws at times, and has campaigned for the abolition of federal agencies including the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the federal minimum wage.
Career
Ernst enlisted in the United States Army Reserve after graduating from Iowa State University’s ROTC programme at the age of 20. In the Iowa National Guard, she worked as a logistics officer and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. During the Iraq War, she served as the company commander of the 1168th Transportation Company in Kuwait for a year in 2003–2004. She was the commanding officer of the 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion at Camp Dodge, the Iowa Army National Guard’s largest battalion, at the end of her career. Ernst served in the Army Reserve and Army National Guard for 23 years before retiring from the military in 2015.
Ernst admitted to being sexually harassed in the military in a 2014 interview with Time Magazine, saying, “I had comments, passes, things like that” that she was able to stop, and that she would favour removing sexual assault cases from the line of command.
The Associated Press reported in December 2019 that Ernst’s campaign had worked closely with a political nonprofit founded by a longtime consultant; such organisations are tax-exempt and are not required to disclose donors, but they cannot make political campaigning their primary purpose and must keep their activities separate from the candidates they support. Any suggestion that they acted beyond the “spirit of the law” was “false news,” according to an Ernst campaign adviser. The nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission after the storey was published.
When Trump supporters stormed the United States Capitol, Ernst was participating in the certification of the 2021 United States Electoral College vote count. She branded the storming “a protest turned chaos” and “a terrible violation of those holy beliefs,” noting her military service to preserve the freedom to peaceful protest. When the certification process was brought back up in Congress, Ernst voted in favour of it.
