John Neely Kennedy Wiki/Bio
John Neely Kennedy, an American lawyer and politician, was born on November 21, 1951, and has served as the junior United States Senator representing Louisiana since 2017. From 2000 to 2017, he was the Louisiana State Treasurer, a Democrat who later became a Republican.
Kennedy was born in Centreville, Mississippi, and attended Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia School of Law before enrolling in Oxford’s Magdalen College. Before competing for state attorney general as the Democratic contender in 1991, he worked on Governor Buddy Roemer’s staff. He was elected Louisiana State Treasurer in 1999, and he was re-elected in 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015.
Career
In 2004 and 2008, Kennedy ran for the United States Senate but lost both times. He switched parties in 2007 and became a Republican. Kennedy ran for Senate again in 2016, when U.S. Senator David Vitter decided not to seek reelection. In the November nonpartisan blanket primary, he finished first, and in the December runoff, he defeated Democrat Foster Campbell 61–39 percent. On January 3, 2017, he was sworn in. Kennedy was one of eight Republican senators that objected to the 2020 presidential election being certified.
Kennedy ran for the U.S. Senate seat held by John Breaux, who was retiring at the time. In the state’s jungle primary, he ran as a Democrat and lost against Republican David Vitter and Democrat Chris John. The runoff election was won by Vitter. In 2008, Kennedy ran for Senate again, this time as a Republican. He was defeated by incumbent Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu, 52.1 percent to 45.7 percent; in the same year, Republican presidential nominee John McCain defeated Barack Obama in Louisiana, but Obama was elected. Kennedy stated on January 26, 2016, that he would run for Senate a third time. He fought more than 20 opponents in his bid to succeed retiring Vitter. After losing a race for governor against John Bel Edwards, Vitter announced his resignation from the Senate in 2015.
