John Cornyn Wiki/Bio
John Cornyn, an American politician and attorney, was born on February 2, 1952, and has served as the senior United States Senator for Texas since 2002. During the 114th and 115th Congresses, he served as the Republican Senate Majority Whip. Cornyn was also the Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 2007 to 2011.
Cornyn is a native of Houston and a graduate of Trinity University and St. Mary’s University School of Law, as well as the University of Virginia School of Law, where he earned an LL.M. From 1985 to 1991, he served as a judge on Texas’ 37th District Court. He was elected to the Texas Supreme Court as an associate justice, where he served from 1991 to 1997. Cornyn was elected Attorney General of Texas in 1998 and served for one term until obtaining a position in the United States Senate in 2002. In 2008, 2014, and 2020, he was re-elected.
Cornyn was born in Houston, Texas, to Atholene Gale Cornyn (née Danley) and US Air Force colonel John Cornyn II.
Career
After his family moved to Tokyo in 1968, he attended the American School in Japan and graduated in 1969. He graduated from Trinity University in 1973 with a journalism degree and was a member of Chi Delta Tau. Cornyn graduated from St. Mary’s University School of Law with a Juris Doctorate in 1977 and the University of Virginia School of Law with an LL.M. in 1995. In 1994, he received the St. Mary’s Distinguished Law School Graduate award, and in 2001, he was named a Trinity University Distinguished Alumnus.
Cornyn made headlines in 2005 when he linked the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear arguments for Terri Schiavo’s life to the recent killings of Judge Joan Lefkow’s husband and mother, as well as Judge Rowland Barnes, in the courtroom. Cornyn explained: “I’m not sure if there’s a link, but there have been some recent incidents of courthouse violence in the United States. I’m curious if there’s a link between the sense in some areas that judges are making political choices while remaining unaccountable to the public, and that this perception builds up to the point where some people resort to violence.” His and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s statements were severely panned, particularly by The New York Times. Cornyn later stated that the comments had been taken out of context and that he regretted making it.
Cornyn was one of eight Republican senators who signed a letter to US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Acting Secretary of State John Sullivan in April 2018, expressing “deep concern” about a UN report exposing “North Korean sanctions evasion involving Russia and China,” and asserting that the findings “demonstrate an elaborate and alarming military-venture between rog and rog.”
