(b. November 25, 1940 in Mocksville, North Carolina), the head coach of the 1981 to 1993 Washington Redskins team which won 140 wins, including the three championships of Super Bowl in twelve years.

Gibbs was one of the 2 children born to J.C. and Winnie Gibbs in Mocksville, North Carolina. Gibbs’ dad worked as a peace officer in various posts, including as a sheriff’s deputy, until he eventually moved the family to Santa Fe Springs, California, and then worked at the bank. The mother of Gibbs was working for the telephone company. As the family went on to move, Gibbs spent his early childhood in North Carolina in Mocksville, Asheville, and Sand Hill. He then attended Santa Fe Springs High School in California and Cerritos Junior College in Norwalk, California before entering San Diego State University in 1961. He received a B.S. from the state of San Diego in 1964 and an M.S. in 1966.

Gibbs’ innate interest in sport throughout his college career has been evident. As a student in San Diego, he played tight endings, a lineback and a guard under coach Don Coryell, for the Aztecs. Gibbs was later a graduate assistant and coached the Coryell offensive line between 1964 and 1966. Gibbs was an offensive line coach for Florida State Seminoles in 1967 and 1968, where he focussed on a pass-through crime which contributed to the 15–4–2 record of that team during those years. Gibbs was the re-coach of the offensive line at the University of Southern California (USC) under John McKay and contributed to the record of the Trojans 15–4–1 for the period 1969–70. He spent two more years coaching as an assistant coach at Arkansas Razorbacks University in 1971–1972 and then in 1973 at the National Football League (NFL).

Career

Gibbs left the cardinals in 1977 with a record 42–27–1, including two titles from the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC). He then became the offensive coordinator of Tampa Bay Buccaneers under former USC coach McKay, but in 1979 Gibbs moved to San Diego, once again under the leadership of Coryell, to be the offensive coordinator of the Chargers. Gibbs kept the Chargers until 1980 and both years the team took the titles of the Western Division American Football Conference (AFC).

On 13 January 1981, Gibbs entered into a series of negotiations with Jack Kent Cooke, owner of Washington Redskins, after fifteen years of his assistant coaching, and became a head coach to replace Jack Pardee. Gibbs started precariously, without winning in his first five games. Nevertheless, the team gathered for a spectacular final, finishing the 1981 season with a 27–17 win over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII.

In retrospect, the Super Bowl win was not only a championship season culmination, but a prologue for eleven winning seasons as Washington Head Coach during Gibbs’ twelve-year tenure. For three consecutive years the NFC Eastern Division was awarded to Redskins from 1982 to 1984, including NFC titles in 1982 and 1983, and for these two years Gibbs received awards from the Associated Media Coach of the Year. While most points scored during the regular 1983 season (541), Gibbs’ team failed to capture a second consecutive win, losing in January 1984 to the Los Angeles Raiders in Superbowl XVIII.

By 1986, Gibbs, a quiet but hard-working and dedicated head coach, had established his ability to win four consecutive seasons, with 10 wins each. In 1988 he began the NFL championships with a 42–10 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII and again in 1992 over the Buffalo Bills. Gibbs was named as the Coach of the Year after the 1991 season by Sporting News. Gibbs became one of only three NFL coaches, winning three Super Bowls with the Redskins winning 37–24 in Super Bowl XXVI 1992. Observers generously credited Gibbs, because during his coaching career with the Washington DC team, he overtook the disadvantage of persistent player sales. In particular, Gibbs won his Super Bowl with a succession of quarterbacks, starting with Joe Theismann in 1982, Doug Williams in 1988 and Mark Rypien in 1992.

During his winning leadership day, on 5 March 1993, Gibbs amazed the sports public by announcing the resignation of the Washington Redskins as Head Coach. Gibbs cited his desire to spend more time with his wife, former Pat Escobar and two sons, regardless of the two years left on its contract – estimated at 2.5 million $. Gibbs’ assistant, Richie Petitbon, was appointed as a substitute head coach. Gibbs turned his interest in the NASCAR Winston Cup racing in retirement, bought a NASCAR team in August 1991 and founded Joe Gibbs Racing.

In 1991 Gibbs wrote with Jerry Jenkins an autobiography. In his book Gibbs talked about his financial shortcomings, born-again Christian faith and others with brutal honesty. Hard-working and straightforward, Gibbs demonstrated that he can coach without histrionics or profanity. On 26 January 1996, he was appointed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
