James Harden Wiki/Bio
James Harden was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 26, 1989. Harden and his two siblings were raised by their mother, Monja Willis, in the infamous Compton neighbourhood after their father, a retired Navy seaman, was largely absent from their lives.
Harden stood a modest 6’1″ and was plagued by bouts of asthma when he first tried out for the boys’ basketball team at Artesia High School in nearby Lakewood. He amazed his coaches right away with his game instincts, and after growing a few inches, he became one of the best players in the nation. Harden was a McDonald’s All-American in 2007 after leading Artesia to back-to-back state championships.
Harden, one of Arizona State’s most decorated recruits, quickly helped turn around a programme that had fallen to an 8-22 record in 2006-07. During Harden’s freshman season, the Sun Devils improved to 21 wins, and by his third and final year, they had improved to 25 wins and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He finished his college career as the Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year and an All-American, finishing third all-time in ASU’s record book with an average of 19.0 points per game, and his No. 13 was later retired by the school.
Harden was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2009 NBA draught by the Oklahoma City Thunder, and he began his professional career by winning All-Rookie Second Team honours.
Career
He was an important part of a squad that included powerhouse scorers Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook by 2011-12. He was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, and the Thunder cruised through the playoffs before losing to LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals in five games.
The Thunder shocked the NBA when they announced in late October 2012, just before the start of the season, that they were trading Harden to the Rockets, allegedly due to the two sides’ failure to reach an agreement on a deal. The Thunder received guard Kevin Martin, recent draught pick Jeremy Lamb, and several potential draught picks in exchange, but the lack of an impact player to equal Harden’s output made the trade seem heavily lopsided in Houston’s favour.
Harden has established himself as one of the best players in the NBA since joining the Rockets prior to the 2012-13 season. That year, he was named to his first of six consecutive All-Star appearances, and he finished second in the voting for Most Valuable Player in 2015 and 2017, before eventually winning the award in 2018.
In his first few years with the Rockets, despite his individual brilliance, Harden was unable to drive the team beyond the pack of contenders. Houston made it to the Western Conference Finals in 2015, but was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs the next year, and saw another promising season cut short in the second round the year after.
The Rockets won an NBA-best 65 games in 2017-18, thanks to Paul’s seasoned leadership and key role players like Eric Gordon fitting in nicely alongside Harden in his prime, before losing heartbreakingly in the Western Conference Finals to the Golden State Warriors. The following season, Harden’s unstoppable scoring abilities helped Houston climb out of an early pit, but the season was again cut short by the Warriors in the playoffs.
