Early in his career, he passed up a prominent part in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket to play the character of Lieutenant Gorman in James Cameron’s Aliens (1986). According to Quintel, Hanford’s terrain is “kind of flat,” and there “was not a ton to do” while he was growing up. As a result, he and his pals were constantly seeking ways to occupy themselves, and he eventually integrated these types of escapades into Regular Show.
He was influenced in his pursuit of animation by animators Matt Groening, Mike Judge, and Joe Murray, with whom he eventually worked. As he entered his teenage years, he enjoyed drawing and watching cartoons such as The Simpsons, Beavis and Butt-Head, Rocko’s Modern Life, and The Ren & Stimpy Show. He also enjoyed watching British surreal comedy shows such as The League of Gentlemen, The Office, and The Mighty Boosh, which would later inspire Quintel’s work.
Quintel spent much time playing the video game ToeJam & Earl, an influence he subsequently called “the perfect platform” for the characters Mordecai and Rigby from Regular Show. In 1998, when he was 16 years old, his father handed him a video camera, which he used to produce a few minutes of stop motion cinema using Lego men and primitive paper cutouts for various short film projects at Hanford High School. This approach at CalArts inspired Quintel to create a little animated film in the spring of 2005 about an ambassador who loses his composure amid a relatively innocuous conversation.[6] The Naive Man from Lolliland is the name of Quintel’s newest movie, which he directed. The Naive Man from Lolliland won the Producers Choice Award and the Student Animator Award at the 2005 Nextoons Nicktoons Film Festival. The Producers Choice Award consisted of an Apple G5 computer and a copy of Bauhaus Software’s Mirage animation software. The Student Animator Award comprised US$1,000 and a copy of Softimage XSI 3D computer graphics software. Both awards were presented to Quintel in the fall of his fourth year at CalArts.

Two slackers are left to their own devices to manage a convenience shop and gas station on Halloween night in the film “2 in the AM PM,” where the presence of sweets laced with narcotics causes a mini-nightmare for them. Later on, Quintel incorporated aspects of these two characters into the AM PM cast of Regular Show. In 2008, Quintel submitted Regular Show for the Cartoonstitute project at Cartoon Network by utilizing a storyboard. He explained, ‘t think me verbally pitching such an odd concept would have made any sense to anyone.” The project was eventually greenlit.
In 2009, Cartoon Network gave the go-ahead to produce Quintel’s Regular Show and announced they would order further episodes of The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. Regular Show is a comedy about two park groundskeepers, Mordecai (a 6-foot blue jay) and Rigby (a hyperactive raccoon), who strive to amuse themselves at their professions while doing whatever they can to avoid work and escape their daily monotony. The series idea was agreed upon and said it would be about two park groundskeepers.
In addition to his accomplishment of obtaining approval to develop Regular Show, Quintel, and director John Infantino were nominated for an ASIFA-Hollywood Annie Award in the category of “Directing in a Television Production” in December 2009 for their directing work on the episode “Candy Casanova” from Season 2 of The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. This nomination came in conjunction with Quintel’s obtaining approval to develop Regular Show.
However, the American animation director and fellow CalArts alumnus Bret Haaland ultimately won the Director Annie Award in February 2010 for his work on The Penguins of Madagascar – Launchtime. Haaland’s work earned him the award for his contribution to the film. The first episode of Regular Show aired on September 6, 2010, at 8:15 eastern standard time, nine months after Quintel was shortlisted for an Annie Award.
Quintel was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the Outstanding Short-format Animated Program category in September 2011, the first season of Regular Show was airing. Quintel was nominated for this award as executive producer and creator of Regular Show. However, the prize went to the animated special on ABC called Disney Prep & Landing: Operation Secret Santa rather than his Regular Show series, which was a disappointment. By March of 2012, Quintel supervised over 35 people to generate each episode of Regular Show. Going from a concept to a finished product takes approximately nine months.
