J. Cole Wiki/Bio

J. Cole was born Jermaine Lamarr Cole on January 28, 1985, in a US army camp in Frankfurt, Germany, where his father was stationed at the time. His father is of African descent, and his mother is of German descent. Cole’s father abandoned his family soon after, and Cole’s mother brought him and his brother Zach to the United States, specifically North Carolina.

Cole was raised in a multi-ethnic household and claims that his upbringing has made him completely opposed to racism. Cole was a shy kid who was obsessed with music and basketball. He played the violin for a while, and it was during this time that he became addicted to music and dreamed of becoming a musician someday.

Cole’s rapping came naturally to him, and he began doing it frequently by the age of 12. Cole became obsessed with music production after receiving a music sampler from his mother one Christmas. He joined a few local small time groups and began rapping and producing beats.

Cole believed that moving to New York would allow his musical ambitions to breathe, and he found the right excuse by expressing a desire to study there, majoring in computer science while continuing to work on his music side by side.

J. Cole’s career began at a young age, when he and his cousin began to learn the fundamentals of music production on their own. They collaborated on lyrics, and after receiving a drum machine from his mother, Cole began honing his music production skills, and by the time he was 16, he was sending mixtapes to some of the industry’s biggest names, including Jay Z and Eminem, but to no avail.

Cole had already released his first mixtape, ‘The Come Up,’ in the hopes of getting noticed, but instead received disappointment. He would stand outside Jay Z’s office for hours, and when he finally received a call from the man himself, he knew it was his time. Jay Z was initially unimpressed with Cole, but recognised his talent and gave him a chance to feature in one of the songs on his album ‘The Blueprint 3’, which received critical acclaim. Following that, Cole began collaborating with more artists and released his second mixtape in June 2009.

In 2010, he was named one of the “50 Great Breakthrough Artists” by ‘Beyond Race,’ and that same year he embarked on a college tour, where he performed several times with Wiz Khalifa. Cole released a freestyle album titled ‘The Last Stretch’ in June. Later that year, Cole released his next mixtape, titled ‘Friday Night Lights,’ which featured collaborations with Drake, Omen, and Wale. Drake and Cole became friends, and Cole ended up opening for Drake on his UK tour. Cole then accompanied Rihanna on her tour over the next few months.

Career

It was now time for his first studio album, ‘Cole Story: The Other Side,’ which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in its first week of release in 2011. Following the success of his first album, he released another in 2013, titled ‘Born Sinner,’ which featured Kendrick Lamar, TLC, and Miguel. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard charts and went on to sell over a million copies in its first week alone. In the third week, the album grew in popularity and climbed to the top of the much-coveted chart.

The following year, Cole made a strong comeback with another solid album titled ‘2014 Forest Hills Drive.’ He claimed that it was partly autobiographical. Despite being poorly promoted and announced only a few weeks before its release, the album became a massive hit as soon as it hit the markets, debuting at number one on most charts. One single from the album, titled ‘Apparently,’ was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rap Performance category, and the album was also nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rap Album category.

His most successful single to date, ‘4 your eyez only,’ debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 charts in 2016. It had the third highest weekly sales of any album released in 2016, trailing only Drake’s “Views” and Beyonce’s “Lemonade.” Between albums, Cole continued to appear on other rappers’ singles and released a mixtape called ‘Revenge of the Dreamers.’
