Idris Elba Wiki/Bio
A British actor who was perhaps most famous in the TV series The Wire and Luther, Idris Elba, in full Idrissa Akuna Elba (born September 6, 1972, London, England).
Elba was born to immigrant parents of the working class (his father was from Sierra Leone, and his mother was born in Ghana). During his schooling, he became interested in drama and was awarded a grant from Prince’s Trust to join the National Youth Music Theater (1990). Starting at a late teenage age, he worked as a record jockey under the name DJ Big Driis (later Big Driis the Londoner) during a performance audition. He appeared often on British TV from the mid-1990s, his roles including recurring Insiders (1997), Family Affairs (1997) and Dangerfield (1999).
Elba’s career break was on the HBO crime drama The Wire, where he was playing the financially skilful drug kingpin Russell (“Stringer”) Bell for three seasons (2002-04). His interpretation of the brilliant but self-destructive Luther won him the 2012 Golden Globe Award, three Emmy Award nominations and a BAFTA Award. Elba’s later TV loans included Guerrilla miniseries (2017) about radical activists in London in the 1970s.
During this period, Elba’s impressive 6-foot 3-inch (1,9 metres) appeared on the big screen after debuting in Belle mom (1999; Beautiful Mother). He then appeared in movies like 28 Weeks Later (2007), American Gangster (2007) and Obsessed (2009). In 2011 he joined the universe of Marvel Comics in Thor as the Norse deity of Thor (2011), a role he took to Thor 2: The Dark World (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and Avengers: Infinity War (2015). In 2016, Elba performed in Star Trek Beyond the villainous Krall, and three animated films made his rich baritone voice known – as the rough police captain (and water buffalo), chief Bogo in Zootopia, villainous tiger Shere Khan in The Jungle Book and the sea lion Fluke in Finding Dory. His 2017 film credits include action fantasies The Dark Tower, an adaptation of Stephen King’s popular series of books. The Mountain Between Us, an adventure storey of two strangers surviving an avionics crash. And Molly’s Game, a drama based on Molly Bloom’s memoir, who became famous when she was arrested for her role in the illegal high stakes poker ring that Hollywood celebrities favoured.
Career
In 2018 Elba made his debut with Yardie, a drama about a drug mailman sent to London to seek revenge on his brother’s death. In the same year, he made In the Long Run a TV series about his childhood; he appeared in the show as well. Elba was back to his roots as a fierce DJ in the UK TV series Turn Up Charlie (2019) he co-created. In a long-lasting franchise, he then played the villain in his action film Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019). Other loans from 2019 included the Family Musical Cats, a film adaptation of the extremely successful stage production by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Elba starred later in Concrete Cowboy (2020) about a father who is rejoining his son via urban riding. In 2021, when Elba appeared in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad as the supervisor Bloodsport, he joined the DC Extended Universe, the shared film world for DC Comics characters.
