Hardeep Singh Puri Wiki/Bio
Born 15 February 1952 in Delhi, India, he received his education at the University of Delhi, earning a BA (Hons) History with distinction in 1971 and an MA (History) with distinction in 1973. Hindu College Parliament’s Prime Minister. Perceptive debater.
In 1974, he joined the Indian Foreign Service. Served in senior positions at the Ministries of External Affairs and Defence over a 39-year career. In London and Brasilia, he held ambassadorial positions and served as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and New York. Previously served in India’s diplomatic missions in Tokyo and Colombo.
Extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy; served as a member of India’s Delegation to the GATT/UN in Geneva on three occasions, including as Ambassador and Permanent Representative from 2002 to 2005.
Long association and specialisation in trade-related matters, including service on several GATT and WTO Dispute Settlement Panels.
From June 2008 to April 2009, he served as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs responsible for economic relations, before being appointed Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in New York on 4 May 2009.
In August 2011 and November 2012, he served as President of the United Nations Security Council. In 2011–2012, he served as Chairman of the United Nations Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee.
On 28 February 2013, he resigned from the Indian Foreign Service and joined the International Peace Institute (IPI), New York, a non-profit think tank headquartered in New York with offices in Vienna and Manama. From June to December 2013, I worked as a Senior Adviser. Vice-President of the IPI and Secretary General of the Commission on Multilateralism’s Independent Commission (ICM). On 31 March 2016, he resigned from the IPI.

He coordinated the UNDP/UNCTAD Multilateral Trade Negotiations Project from 1988 to 1991, assisting developing countries in the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations. From January 2011 to February 2013, he also chaired the United Nations Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee.
Puri served as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013. In June 2013, he joined the International Peace Institute as a senior advisor.
