Halroy Candis Williams (born December 14, 1934) is an American actor who is best known for his appearances as Police Officer Smith (“Smitty”) on Sanford and Son (1972–1976), Harley Foster on The Waltons (1973–1980), and patriarch Lester Jenkins on the NBC sitcom 227, in which he married Marla Gibbs’ character.Halroy Candis Williams was born on December 14, 1934 (some sources say he was born in 1938).
Williams grew up in Columbus, Ohio ([2][3][4][5]). Williams began acting in community theatre in Ohio in the early 1960s. Before relocating to Hollywood in 1968 to pursue an acting career, Williams worked as a postal worker and a correctional officer. [number six]
In 1970, Williams made a full-time commitment to his acting career. Willams has since starred in films such as Paul Schrader’s Hardcore, Howard Zieff’s Private Benjamin (in which he also played Sgt L.C. “Ted” Ross in the television series of the same name), and Clint Eastwood’s The Rookie.
Career
He appeared in numerous of comic Sinbad’s shows from the early to mid-1990s, including The Sinbad Show and The Cherokee Kid. Williams recently starred as the grandfather in the Bernie Mac picture Guess Who, which was released in 2005.
