Gus Van Sant Wiki/Bio
Full name Gus Greene Van Sant, Jr. (born July 24, 1952) is an American film director and screenwriter noted for portraying characters who are socially and economically underprivileged.
Due to his father’s business travels and his mother’s home life, Van Sant was raised on the road. At the Rhode Island School of Design, he studied filmmaking after starting out as an amateur filmmaker in high school (B.A., 1975). The Discipline of D.E. (1982), a film version of William S. Burroughs’s short story, was one of his earliest short film releases.
His debut feature film, Mala Noche (1985), is about a drugstore employee who becomes enamored with a young Mexican immigrant. The story’s apparent theme of homosexual love would show up in various ways in many of Van Sant’s subsequent films.
A short film called Thanksgiving Prayer, which Burroughs narrated with his trademark raspy growl, was released in 1991. In addition to My Own Private Idaho, which starred River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves, Van Sant made his directorial debut with the film My Own Private Idaho the same year. The story combines aspects of a road movie with the first act of Shakespeare’s Henry IV: A Tale of Two Cities.
Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1993), a film adaptation of a Tom Robbins novel, was a critical and commercial failure for Van Sant. Although severely panned, To Die For (1995) was widely praised for its biting criticism of the American obsession with stardom. During the movie, Nicole Kidman’s character, a Machiavellian news presenter, manipulates three teens into killing her unambitious husband.
With its heartbreaking picture of a teenage mathematical genius struggling to realize his potential, Good Will Hunting (1997) introduced Van Sant to a broader audience in the United States. Van Sant was nominated for his work on the film, which starred Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. In 1998, he directed a version of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho, about a reclusive writer (played by Sean Connery) who mentors an African American teenager. In 2000, he directed Finding Forrester, about an African American teenager.
After that, Van Sant made a trilogy on death under his own direction. Affleck and Damon wrote and starred in the first film in the series, Gerry (2002), which features mostly improvised scenes about two guys lost in the desert. School shootings served as the backdrop for Van Sant’s Elephant (2003) film, which focused on the mundane routines of a group of high school students rather than the violence itself. In Last Days (2005), he also focused on alienation as a topic, presenting an impressionistic, largely dialogue-free account of the days leading up to the suicide of a rock star who resembled Kurt Cobain in appearance.
As a tribute to the Paris arrondissements, Van Sant wrote and directed the part “Le Marais” for the 2006 film Paris, je t’aime. A young adult skateboarder’s misfortunes are the focus of his previous film, Paranoid Park (2007), which dealt with the disorientation of early adulthood. Portland, Oregon served as the film’s setting because it was where Van Sant spent his adolescent years and formative artistic years.
In Milk, he dealt most directly with the issue of homosexuality, which has long been an undercurrent in some of his work (2008). Harvey Milk, one of the country’s first openly gay elected politicians, is profiled in the film. The film, which starred the indomitable Sean Penn, earned nods for best picture and directing at the Academy Awards.
Restless, Van Sant’s 2011 romantic drama about adolescent love and mortality, tackled these themes. Van Sant portrayed current fracking debates with his film Promised Land (2012), which stars Damon as a gas company agent trying to gain drilling rights in a rural Pennsylvania village. Matthew McConaughey starred as a depressed American professor in The Sea of Trees (2015), where he plans to commit suicide in Japan.
However, his plans change when he meets a man who needs his help in Aokigahara, also known as the “suicide forest”. The next year, Van Sant helmed the biography Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot (2018) about the controversial cartoonist John Callahan, who was a quadriplegic.
A musical on Andy Warhol will be presented by Van Sant in 2021, and it is called Andy. Van Sant wrote the narrative and composed the music for the performance, which had its world premiere in Lisbon.
text for motion pictures script; the written story of a movie. While some screenplays are simple summaries of the story, others are extensive shooting scripts that explain every movement, gesture, and implication. Scripts are frequently not written chronologically, but rather in a way that makes filming easier.
Their speaking patterns resemble those of everyday conversation. If a script is never converted into a film, it can be released as a literary work, or it can be developed into a novel, as in Budd Schulberg’s On the Waterfront (1954), which was published for reading after the production was completed.
The director has complete control over how a script is used. American director and pioneer of early film method D.W. Griffith (1875–1948) worked without a plot and created the picture as it was filmed. Slapstick comedian Mack Sennett (1880–1961) performed without notes while working from an elaborate script. Instead, Alfred Hitchcock, a well-known director of suspense films, meticulously prepared every shot before filming began, shooting the movie almost exactly as it was intended, and working closely with the screenwriter to get a clear picture of every scene.

theatrical production: the process of devising, rehearsing, and performing a play. Live performers present such a work to an audience at a specific time and location using inanimate objects such as puppets or themselves as the medium of presentation. Plays can be dramatic or nondramatic, depending on the content they express on stage.
When it comes to dramatic productions, it is common for them to adhere to a written script. However, it is the fictional mimetic quality of the performer’s behavior, rather than the usage of a script, that makes a work dramatic. So, for instance, someone who claims to be an acrobat on the tightrope is performing a dramatic act, while a person actually walks the tightrope is doing an act.
However, only the latter is involved in the formation of a dramatic illusion while the former is. Despite the fact that a dramatic performance may contain nondramatic aspects such as dance, singing, juggling, and acrobatics, its primary focus is on the representation of real or imagined life.
There is no replication of “another existence” in non-dramatic theatrical productions, but rather the performer’s pleasure or the excitement of the audience. The theater is defined as any action that is presented to an audience by a live performer and that has the quality of presentation rather than representation. This can include everything from acrobatics to music to gestures to vocals.
Depending on the play, one activity may predominate to the point that judging the aesthetic quality of the final output is easy. With its portrayal of middle-class behavior, Henrik Ibsen’s play from the 19th century minimizes nondramatic activity; in contrast, Franz Schubert’s song recital from the 19th-century Romantic period emphasizes musical values and, to some extent, even the presentation itself, while ignoring dramatic elements.
In the 20th century, a variety of genres combining dramatic and nondramatic material developed in Europe and the United States. Vaudeville, or music hall, uses a variety of acts, such as fictitious comedies, musical and dance numbers, and dexterity feats, some of which are representational and others not.
Singing and dancing in musicals serve two purposes: they advance the plot and provide a distraction from the purely dramatic presentation. This kind of variation can be found in a lot of Asian theatres, where dramatic moments are developed by dance displays. A flexible definition of theatrical production must be maintained in light of the aforementioned examples
