Guillermo del Toro Wiki/Bio

Director, screenwriter and producer Guillermo del Toro was noted for injecting emotional and philosophical intricacy into his horror and fantasy films.

As a child, Del Toro was drawn to both films and horror stories. Before attending the University of Guadalajara, he made short films in high school. Afterward, he studied cinematic makeup under the tutelage of famed film makeup artist Dick Smith, who is now retired. Del Toro worked as a makeup artist for special effects for most of the 1980s, and he also co-founded the special effects company Cecropia.

before making his directorial debut with Cronos, Del Toro created and directed numerous episodes of the 1988–90 horror television series Hora marcada (1993). Nine Ariel Awards were presented to the film by the Mexican Academy of Film, including best picture, best director, best screenplay, and best original story. It also took home the grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival’s International Critics Week for its portrayal of the effects of a device that grants immortality. Mira Sorvino starred in his next film, Mimic (1997), a production of American studio Miramax. Later, he wrote El espinazo del diablo, a ghost story set towards the close of the Spanish Civil War. Wesley Snipes starred in Del Toro’s comic book adaption Blade II (2002) and he wrote the screenplay for Hellboy (2004).

El laberinto del fauno (2006; Pan’s Labyrinth), an aesthetically stunning and conceptually complex fantasy film written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, won Academy Awards for make-up, art direction, and cinematography. After that, he wrote and directed Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) and Pacific Rim (2013), both of which were wildly successful both domestically and internationally. Critical response to Crimson Peak (2015), a gothic horror thriller, was tepid. Although del Toro authored the story and co-wrote the screenplay for the enchanting fantasy romance The Shape of Water (2017), the film received 13 Academy Award nominations and won four of them, including best picture. Additionally, del Toro was honored with three major awards for his work as a director: the Oscar, the Golden Globe, and the BAFTA.

For Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and its two sequels, Del Toro wrote the screenplay (2013 and 2014). The Strain (2014–17), Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia (2016–18), and 3Below: Tales of Arcadia (2018–19) are all based on his works with Chuck Hogan and Daniel Kraus, respectively.

In the United States, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in Beverly Hills gives out a variety of prizes each year, including the Oscar, to honor outstanding performance in the film business. The first Oscars were given out in 1929, and winners were given a gold-plated statuette known as an Oscar at the time.

In addition to the 24 categories listed above, there are also awards given in the following areas: best picture, acting, directing, original screenplay, adapted screenplay, cinematography, production design and editing, original score, original song, costume and hair design, make-up and hairstyling as well as foreign language films. The winners are announced at the Academy Awards ceremony on February 24th, where the nominees will be announced. Other awards given by the academy include the Gordon E. Sawyer Award for technological contributions as well as scientific and technical ones like the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for excellence in production and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. These awards are not given annually, however. A new yearly category for “exceptional accomplishment in popular film” was established by the academy in August of last year, and it will make its debut at the 2019 awards show. The academy, on the other hand, chose to delay the launch of the new category due to backlash and misunderstanding.

An award-winning picture must be shown for at least one week in a Los Angeles County commercial theatre between January 1 and December 31 of that year, with paid admission. There are certain exceptions to this criterion, such as foreign-language films that are submitted by the country in which they were made and have not yet been seen in the United States. Unlike music awards, which are submitted by the musical artist, eligibility standards for documentaries and short films are different, and they must be officially filed by their producers.

To vote for or nominate someone for an Academy Award, you must be a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Filmmaking divisions of the academy choose the nominations for each award category, with writers nominating fellow writers, directors nominating their fellow filmmakers, and so on. Best picture nominees in most categories are chosen by a vote of the whole academy membership.

Career

Academy Awards can help prominent winners achieve success beyond just international acclaim and distinction. For example, winning the Academy Award for the best picture can greatly boost a film’s box office earnings. The prize generally results in higher remuneration for performers and directors, increased media exposure, and better film offer for actors and filmmakers.

The academy’s awards committee was one of many newly formed committees when it was established in 1927. Award-giving was discussed, but it was put on hold because the academy was focused on its position in labor issues, efforts to restore the film industry’s tarnished image, and its role as a center for the interchange of ideas regarding production techniques and new technology.

It wasn’t until May 1928 that the academy agreed to present Academy Awards of Merit in 12 categories, including the most outstanding production, the most artistic or unique production, and achievement by an actor or actress, in dramatic directing, comedy directing, cinematography, art directing, engineering effects, original story writing, adaptation writing, or title writing.

From August 1, 1927, to July 31, 1928, films released in theatres were eligible for the first Academy Awards. The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood hosted a ceremony on May 16th, 1929, where the prizes were delivered. All categories had nominees from the academy’s complete membership.

Afterward, the academy’s original five branches—actors, writers, directors, producers, and technicians—each with its own board of judges, selected the top 10 nominees in each area before reducing the list to only three suggestions. The ultimate winners were chosen by a central board of judges, which included one representative from each branch.

To honor films released between mid-1928 and 1929, the second annual awards presentation on April 3, 1930, just seven categories remained. The two major film prizes were merged into a single award, the best picture. Since then, the academy’s rules, processes, and classifications have all undergone many revisions.

To be honest so much has changed over the years that the only thing that has remained consistent is the academy’s determination to remain adaptable and stay on top of market trends.

The names of the award winners used to be released to the media ahead of time, but only after the presentation of the awards. In 1939, the Los Angeles Times published the names of the prizewinners before the ceremony, so the event lost all its intrigue in one of the year’s most important for the industry. It’s been like this ever since, with no one knowing who won until the big reveal at the awards ceremony.

In 1953, the Academy Awards were broadcast for the first time in the United States, and since 1969, they have been shown around the world. The ceremony had grown in prominence by the late twentieth century and was broadcast live to millions of people across the world. Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, and Billy Crystal have all served as notable hosts over the years.

Red-carpet interviews were also a big part of the event, and everyone was taking notice of the outfits of the people in attendance. However, dwindling interest in the ceremony’s broadcast in the late 2010s prompted the academy to announce various adjustments, including a three-hour time limit starting in 2019 and earlier airdate starting in 2020.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) art director Cedric Gibbons is credited with designing the award statuette, which depicts a knight standing on a cinema reel and brandishing a sword. The original figurine, based on Gibbons’ design, was commissioned to sculptor George Stanley. A bronze sculpture covered in 24-karat gold plating was used for many years.

Plaster was used instead of metal because there was a shortage during World War II. They’ve been upgraded to gold-plated Britannia because they were originally made of silver. The style, on the other hand, hasn’t changed save for the pedestal’s base, which was raised in height in 1945. 8.5 pounds is the weight of the sculpture, which is 13.5 inches tall (34.3 cm) (3.8 kg).

There are three possible roots for the Oscar statuette’s nickname. The statuette’s name, according to actress Bette Davis, came from her observation that the backside resembled her husband Harmon Oscar Nelson’s buttocks. Sidney Skolsky, a columnist, insisted that he named the award after himself to denigrate pomposity. Margaret Herrick, an Academy librarian, claimed the statuette resembled her uncle Oscar and hence gave it the name. The origin of the moniker is a mystery to this day.
