George Benson Wiki/Bio
George Benson is just one of the greatest guitarists in the history of jazz and a wonderfully multi-faceted musician whose expertise makes him easily cross between direct jazz, smooth jazz and contemporary R&B. Blessed with a superb taste, beautiful, round guitar tonality, great speed, a wonderful sense of logic in creating solos, and as always, with an unstoppable urge to swing, Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery may have been inspiring to Benson, but his style is wholly his own. It can not only play brilliant lead, it is also one of the best guitarist rhythms around, supportive of soloists and a dangerous swinger, especially with a soul-jazz flavour. As a member of the band Brother Jack McDuff’s he acquired his skills in the first sixties. In a lush and soulful tenor, Benson can also sing with manners like those of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. He’s in a sense the equivalent of guitar play by Nat King Cole, a fantastic player whose smooth way with a pop vocal helped to solidify his ability on the market. It is this combination of singing and guitar playing that has earned him many honours and chart success, especially in 1976 when Breezin’s breakthrough overpassed the pop, R&B and jazz charts and won home the Grammy awards for best pop instrumental performance and record of the year. Benson remained a favourite chart and awards season, with other Top Ten Jazz albums released, including Grammy’s 1980’s Give Me the Night, Love Remember’s 1993’s, and Grammy’s 2006 Givin’ It Up with Al Jarreau. Benson, together with his original studio alba, paid tribute to his idols, released Inspiration for 2013: a tribute to Nat King Cole and 2019’s Walking to New Orleans, inspired by Fats Domino and Chuck Berry.
Born in Pittsburgh in 1943, Benson was actually a singer, a singer in nightclubs at age 8, recorded four sides of RCA’s X label in 1954 and formed a 17-year old rock band, using a guitar that his stepfather made for him. Christian, Montgomery and Charlie Parker showed him their interest in jazz and Benson played in Brother Jack McDuff’s band by 1962. Following the formation of his own group in 1965, Benson became another of the greatest discoveries made by John Hammond, recording two renowned albums of soul jazz and hard bop for Columbia as well as recording various records from others, including Miles Davis’ Miles in the Sky. Shortly after Montgomery’s death in June 1968, the producer Creed Taylor started recording him with larger ensembles at A&M (between 1968 and 1969), large groups and all star combos at CTI (from 1971 to 1976).
Although the A&M and CTI albums certainly won their support and made Benson a guitar leader in the jazz world, after signing with Warner Bros. in 1976 he gained more commercial recognition. His first album for Breezin’s Warner Bros. became a top ten hit on his only vocal track, the “This Masquerade,” and this lead to a string of hit alba in a pop-style R&B flavour, culminating in the Give Me the Night, produced by Quincy Jones. But jazz remained the centre of his sound, as was demonstrated in 1989’s Tenderly standard album, and in the 1990s Big Boss Band with the Basie band, the latter more prominently featuring their guitar.
The Latin-infused Absolute Benson first arrived on the Billboard Jazz chart in 2000 and was followed by the 2004 five-chart number Irreplaceable. He then paired Al Jarreau with Givin’s vocalist in 2006, who ran above contemporary jazz chart and received Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.
Benson began his career as a guitarist and singer, playing in his native Pittsburgh’s corner bars with a succession of rhythm and blues and rock bands. Benson trained with organist Jack McDuff in the early 1960s and recorded his first album as leader at the age of 21. His debut album The New Boss Guitar was recorded in 1964 with McDuff in organ. Following four years of play and recording with McDuff, Benson set off alone and moved to New York City, then the world’s jazz capital. During this first period of his career, Benson met his 40-year-old wife, Johnnie, whom he married in 1965. They would have together seven children, all sons. Benson formed his own band in New York and encountered two acquaintances who were to become major influences on his stardom: guitarist Wes Montgomery and Columbia Records producer and managing director John Hammond.
It was Montgomery, one of the most creative jazz guitarists, who met Benson early and complimented and encouraged the young guitarist to continue his already impressive work. Montgomery would prove the most important inspiration for Benson’s style of playing. Hammond was one of Benson’s greatest discoveries in 1965. He was struck by Benson’s increasing list of sideman loans, including the work of artists like Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis. In 1965, he signed Benson to Columbia, recording three albums for it. Lonnie Smith on organ and Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax featured her first album, It’s Uptown. This album was produced by Hammond along with his second album, Benson Burner, and was the main bop-influenced vein of that day’s jazz. This brought a lot of positive attention to the young guitarist in the jazz community. Then Benson followed up his first two albums, Lonnie Smith and Ronnie Cuber, with The GeorgeBenson Cookbook in 1966.
