Gayle King was born on December 28, 1954, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, to Scott and Peggy King, the first of their four daughters. Her father was an electrical engineer stationed in Ankara, Turkey, and she spent much of her childhood there before moving back to the United States with her family. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park.
She married Bill Bumpus, an attorney and Connecticut associate attorney general, in 1982. Kirby, the couple’s daughter, and William, the couple’s son, are the couple’s only children. In 1993, King and Bumpus divorced.

Despite Rose’s departure from CBS due to sexual misconduct, the two became friends. King worked as a special correspondent for Good Morning America before joining CBS News. King signed an agreement with CBS on November 10, 2011 to co-anchor CBS This Morning beginning January 9, 2012. When it was revealed that CBS planned to keep the findings of sexual assault and harassment at the network hidden, she openly demanded complete openness.
