Gary Peters Wiki/Bio
Gary Charles Peters Sr., an American lawyer and politician, was born on December 1, 1958, and has served as the junior United States Senator representing Michigan since 2015. From 2013 to 2015, he served as the United States Representative for Michigan’s 14th congressional district, which encompasses the eastern half of Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Southfield, and Pontiac. From 2009 to 2013, he was the representative for Michigan’s 9th congressional district.
Prior to his election to Congress, Peters served in the US Navy Reserve, worked as an investment counsellor for 22 years, and briefly worked in academia. He was elected to the Rochester Hills City Council in 1991 and served in the Michigan Senate from 1995 to 2002, representing the 14th district. In 2002, he ran for Michigan Attorney General as a Democrat, but lost to Republican Mike Cox by a razor-thin margin. Governor Jennifer Granholm then named him Commissioner of the Michigan Lottery, which he held from 2003 to 2008, when he resigned to run for Congress.
Gary Charles Peters grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, where he was born on December 1, 1958. He is the son of historian and statistician Herbert Garrett Peters and Madeleine A. (née Vignier). His mother was a war bride from France, while his father was from the United States.
Career
Peters graduated from Rochester High School in 1976 and went on to Alma College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and was inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa honour societies. In 1984, he graduated from the University of Detroit with a Master of Business Administration. Peters has a law degree from Wayne State University and a master’s degree in philosophy from Michigan State University.
Peters was the third Griffin Endowed Chair in American Government at Central Michigan University from 2007 to 2008. For $65,000 a year, he taught one subject a semester while also planning additional student activities such as two policy debates and producing a journal on Michigan politics and policy. Two months after being hired, Peters launched his bid for Congress. Some students and faculty members objected to Peters’ appointment, claiming that he would be unable to remain neutral in the classroom while running for office, and that his university job was essentially supporting his campaign.
On August 7, 2007, Peters formally announced his intention to run against eight-term Republican congressman Joe Knollenberg in the 9th district, which encompassed almost all of Oakland County, putting an end to months of speculation. Peters resigned as commissioner of the state lottery to give his whole attention to the campaign.
Knollenberg was seen as vulnerable due to a growing Democratic trend in what was once a very conservative suburb. Knollenberg’s opponents in 2002 and 2004 performed far worse than the district’s Democratic base, but he was nearly beaten in 2006 by Nancy Skinner, a former radio talk-show personality who spent almost no money – the first time a Republican had come close to losing the seat in nearly half a century. As a result, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee decided to defeat Knollenberg.
