Career

This chess club dates all the way back to 1915 when it was created by Grandmaster Frank J. Marshall. Incorporated in 1922, the Marshall Chess Club has had its main office at 23 West 10th Street since 1931. Located on one of the city’s most picturesque blocks, the brownstone dates back to 1832. A group of well-to-do friends and family members paid for it.

On August 10, 1877, Frank James Marshall was born in New York City. Frank Marshall joined the Montreal Chess Club in 1895 and rapidly became one of the city’s top players after winning the club championship in his first year there.

Frank Marshall turned 140 years old today, having been born on August 10th, 1877, in New York City. The family moved to Montreal, Canada, when Marshall was eight years old. When Frank was ten, his father, who was an excellent chess player, taught him the game. Marshall showed promise in the game, and as a result, the greatest chess players in the city invited him to the Hope Coffee House.

It was not long until he was beating the coffee-house players handily. Marshall describes this moment in his memoirs, Marshall’s Best Games of Chess.

Frank Marshall was Montreal’s greatest player by the age of 13, and he won the Montreal Chess Club Championship at the age of 15 with a perfect score. On a separate visit to Montreal in 1893, Frank Marshall joined William Steinitz (shown left) for a simultaneous lecture. Despite the fact that Marshall lost the game in just 26 moves, the former world champion had nothing but admiration for him:

With only 19 years old left, Marshall emigrated back to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York. In Manhattan and Brooklyn, he joined the chess clubs and won the club championships at the age of 22 in both. Marshall’s journey to the 1899 London competition was made possible because of the combined efforts of the two clubs.

The A tournament was too exclusive for Marshall, so he competed in the main competition and won. Emmanuel Lasker and Harry Nelson Pillsbury were the eventual winners of the legendary Paris competition, which took place on the fringes of the world exposition at the “Grand Cercle” on Boulevard Montmartre. As a result of his upset victory over Lasker, Marshall shot to prominence in Europe. Three years later, Marshall was strong enough to take face Lasker for the title of World Champion in the Olympics. Lasker, on the other hand, demanded 5000 dollars, which he could not afford to pay. Marshall was in his thirties when the incident occurred.

Because Pillsbury was unwell, Marshall was the US champion in 1904, but he refused to accept the title. (After defeating Pillsbury’s predecessor, Jackson W. Showalter, in 1909, he finally conceded.) Until 1936, Marshall was the reigning champ. -Ed.)

He beat Lasker and Janowski by two points at the Cambridge-Springs competition, which took place the same year. David Janowski and Sigbert Tarrasch, two more potential World Champion rivals, also competed in the 1905 tournament. Tarrasch thrashed him 1:8 while he defeated the former 8:4 (with four draws).. (with eight draws).

Marshall, on the other hand, came out on top in the 15th German Chess Federation Congress in Nuremberg in 1906, defeating both Tarrash and Janowski in the process.

He continued to work with Spielberg on famous projects including Poltergeist (1982) and Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983), the latter of which he produced independently of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) by Kennedy.

With no World Championship match against Tarrasch or Maroczy in the offing, Lasker, who was at that time living in the United States of America, eventually accepted Marshall’s challenge in the hopes of raising money from American sponsors. The competition lasted from January to April 1907, with games taking place in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago, and Memphis to see who could get the most wins. Marshal’s strategy backfired miserably, as Lasker handed him an embarrassing 8-0 defeat (seven draws).

The dadaist Marcel Duchamp visited New York in the years leading up to World War One, and Marshall met him there. During his time in New York, Marcel Duchamp became fascinated with the game of chess, and he eventually gave up his vocation as an artist to pursue a career in the game. In New York, Marshall also started the Marshall Chess Club, which is still going strong today.
