His father Jack Marshall was a musician and he was raised in Glendale, California. With no World Championship match against Tarrasch or Maroczy in the offing, Lasker, who was at that time living in the United States of America, eventually accepted Marshall’s challenge in the hopes of raising money from American sponsors. The competition lasted from January to April 1907, with games taking place in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago, and Memphis to see who could get the most wins. Marshal’s strategy backfired miserably, as Lasker handed him an embarrassing 8-0 defeat (seven draws).
