Ferguson Jenkins Wiki/Bio

Known professionally as Fergie Jenkins, Fergie Jenkins was a dominant pitcher in the late 1960s and early 1970s as one of the game’s top pitchers. He was a hard-throwing right-hander with the Chicago Cubs who won at least 20 games in each of the six seasons from 1967 to 1972. Jenkins was named the National League’s top pitcher in 1971 after posting a 24–13 record with 263 strikeouts and a 2.77 ERA to win the Cy Young Award.

For most of his youth, Jenkins competed in Canada’s top amateur leagues in baseball, basketball, and hockey, all of which he won. He joined with the Philadelphia Phillies as a free agent in the early 1960s, just after graduating from high school. After being acquired by the Chicago Cubs in 1966, he was quickly turned from a relief pitcher to a starter. The following year, he was one of the Cubs’ aces, going 20 or more games won for the first time in six years.

For the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox, Jenkins had a 115-93 record while pitching from 1974 to 1981. Upon his return to the Cubs in 1982, he remained with the team for two more seasons before calling it a career.

Jenkins is the only pitcher in MLB history with at least 3,000 strikeouts and less than 1,000 walks. Pitchers like Bob Gibson and Tom Seaver were prominent during Jenkins’ time in the majors. He had a career record of 284 wins and 226 losses, with an earned run average of 3.34 in his time as a professional pitcher. He’s the 10th most prolific strikeout hitter in baseball history with 3,192 strikeouts. In 1991, he became the first Canadian to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Texas Rangers are an American Major League Baseball (AL) baseball team headquartered in Arlington, Texas (AL). The Texas Rangers, formerly the Washington Senators, began to play in 1961 and have won two American League pennants (2010 and 2011).

During each of their first three seasons, the Senators finished in the bottom half of the standings and lost at least 100 games. After acquiring slugger Frank Howard prior to the 1965 season, though, the Senators’ plight remained mostly unchanged. After finishing in last place for the third time in 1968, the Washington Senators recruited all-time great Ted Williams as their manager, despite his lack of prior coaching experience. In his debut season as head coach, Williams led the Senators to their first winning season (a 86–76 record), but the team then declined in each of the following two seasons. Due to the Senators’ consistently bad play and low attendance and revenue, the team was forced to relocate to Arlington following the 1971 season by the team’s owners.

The team was renamed the Texas Rangers in honor of the state’s storied military-police force, but it had a similar first year in Arlington to its time in Washington. Along with the team’s 100-game losing streak, Williams—who was perhaps the team’s biggest draw—also announced his retirement. Towards the close of the 1973 season, the Rangers hired Billy Martin as their head coach. Texas won 84 games the following season behind the excellent pitching of new signing Fergie Jenkins and finished second in the division. The Rangers, on the other hand, failed to win a division title for the rest of the decade.

While Ranger’s third baseman Buddy Bell was on the rise in the early 1980s, the team as a whole struggled, going winless in five of the team’s six seasons from 1980 to 1985. During the decade, the Rangers signed additional young players including outfielder Ruben Sierra and second baseman Julio Franco, but their postseason drought persisted. When Nolan Ryan was with the Rangers from 1989 to 1993, he pitched his sixth and seventh no-hitters in his career while playing for the franchise. George W. Bush, the future president of the United States, served as the Rangers’ managing general partner from 1989 to 1994 after the franchise was sold.

At this point in the Rangers’ history, they had assembled an all-star lineup that included players like Ivan Rodriguez, Juan Gonzalez, and Rafael Palmeiro. They went on to win three AL West titles in four years, from 1996 to 1999. The first two times Texas made the playoffs, it was a disappointment, as the Rangers were swept by the New York Yankees. With star shortstop Alex Rodriguez signing a 10-year, $252 million contract with the organization in 2001, the Rangers garnered headlines despite finishing last in their division the year before. In his three seasons with the team, he failed to lift the Rangers out of the cellar, and he was eventually moved to the Yankees in 2004 as part of a team-wide rebuilding effort.

Team president (and part of the ownership group) Ryan was hired in 2008, and the Rangers, who had both promising prospects and established veterans like third baseman Michael Young on their roster, surged back into the postseason in 2010 after winning the AL West. Ryan was part of the ownership group in 2010. The Rangers went on to win the American League pennant and the World Series, where they were defeated by the San Francisco Giants. In 2011, Texas won their second straight American League pennant and met the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, a series that Texas ultimately fell short of winning, going down in seven games. On their comeback in 2012, the Rangers were eliminated in the first round by the Baltimore Orioles in the one-game Wild Card Playoff.

The Tampa Bay Rays won the 163rd and final regular-season game of the 2013 season, and the team missed out on a trip to the Wild Card Playoffs. The Rangers’ next season was marred by injuries, and they finished with the lowest record in the American League (67–95). Even though Texas suffered a setback in 2015, they still won 88 games, took home the division title, and advanced to the postseason. The Rangers went 36–11 (.766) in one-run games in 2016, setting a modern baseball record for winning percentage, and won another division title. However, the Toronto Blue Jays came out on top in the division series for the second year in a row. After that, the Rangers began a losing skid, which coincided with the Houston Astros’ rise to the top of the American League.

Headquartered in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Phillies are a member of the National League (NL). With seven National League pennants and two World Series victories (1980 and 2008), the Phillies are the longest-running single-name, the single-city team in American professional sports.

Until 1890, the team was known as the Quakers and the Phillies (a shortened version of “Philadelphians”). In 1890, the team officially changed its name to the Phillies to reflect its new identity. The team had a rocky start and only made it to the playoffs for the first time in 1915 thanks to legendary pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander. After the 1917 season, the Phillies traded away Alexander and began a decade of mediocrity that saw them finish last or second to last in the NL 24 times between 1919 and 1947. The Phillies’ “Whiz Kids” team of Richie Ashburn and Robin Roberts made the World Series for the first time in 35 years in 1950, but they were swept by the New York Yankees.

After 1950, the Phillies went through another lengthy playoff drought, during which volatile slugger Dick Allen’s unpredictable behavior kept things interesting (1963–69). In 1972, future Hall of Famers Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton made their Phillies debuts, and the team began to turn the corner. Between 1976 and 1983, the Phillies won six NL East Division titles behind Carlton’s strong pitching and Schmidt’s timely power hitting. This was the longest winning streak in franchise history. Despite only making it to the Global Series twice over that time period, the club did win its first world championship in 1980. The Phillies made a comeback to the World Series in 1993 but ultimately fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in six games after Joe Carter hit the game-winning home run.

After losing their 10,000th game in 2007, the Philadelphia Phillies became the first team in sports history to reach that milestone. However, the Phillies’ 2007 campaign came to a successful conclusion with the team winning its first NL East Division title in 14 years. As division champions again in 2008, the Phillies went on to win the World Series thanks to the dominance of Cole Hamels and Brad Lidge on the mound.

It took them five games to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays and capture their second World Series title as a franchise. The Phillies won the National League pennant for the second time in a row in 2009, however, they were defeated in the World Series by the New York Yankees. The team added All-Star pitchers Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, and Cliff Lee between the end of the 2009 season and the start of the 2011 campaign. With the help of Hamels, the Phillies were able to win 102 games in 2011 and set a new franchise record. However, the Philadelphia Phillies were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Phillies were hampered by injuries and an aging roster in the following seasons, and they failed to make the playoffs each time. The Phillies signed free-agent outfielder Bryce Harper to a multi-year contract in the offseason of 2019, but the team only managed a.500 records in his first season.
