Experian Information Solutions Inc. is a market leader in information services on a global scale. Formerly a branch of automotive and electronics conglomerate TRW, the corporation is one of the country’s top three consumer credit reporting agencies, alongside TransUnion Corp. and Equifax Inc. Additionally, the company is the market leader in consumer credit reporting in the United Kingdom, and it operates in around 50 nations globally.

Experian has comprehensive consumer and business credit databases, which it tailors in a variety of ways for direct marketers, magazine publishers, lenders, and collection agencies, among others. Additionally, the organisation operates a National Fraud Database, which provides customer identity and verification services to businesses that do credit card transactions online. Additionally, Experian’s National Business Database has records on around 14 million small and medium-sized enterprises throughout North America. Experian merged with CCN, the credit reporting division of Great Universal Stores, in 1996.

Experian Information Solutions originated as a TRW subsidiary. TRW began as the Cleveland Cap Screw Co. in 1901. It began with manufacturing cap screws, bolts, and studs, but quickly expanded to include welded valves for automobiles manufactured by automotive pioneer Alexander Winton. Early in the twentieth century, the corporation changed hands and names many times before settling on Thompson Products Inc. in 1926. It manufactured a variety of components for the automobile and aviation sectors at the time.

Thompson Products amalgamated with Ramo-Wooldridge Corp. in 1958, rebranding itself Thompson-Ramo-Wooldridge. Ramo-Wooldridge was a pioneer in the field of defence electronics. The combined firm grew to be a global leader in defence and automotive components. It pioneered the development of numerous critical automotive components, including the permanently lubricated steering linkage and the seat belt pretensioning device. By the mid-1960s, the company’s name had been abbreviated to TRW, and it had begun a global expansion, acquiring plants in Germany, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.

TRW developed a consumer credit information bureau while it was researching rack-and-pinion power steering and seat belt technology. In the mid-1960s, the business began compiling a consumer database. TRW also ran a small-business database beginning in the mid-1970s. TRW’s information sector expanded both organically and through acquisitions. By the mid-1980s, TRW Information Services, as the consumer credit unit was known, had nearly 90 million Americans’ credit histories on file. TRW Information Services was the largest credit reporting organisation in the United States at the time.

Although information services appeared to be a profitable business, it had little to do with the rest of TRW’s primary goods. Direct said in a March 1, 1999 interview with Experian CEO D. Van Skilling that “TRW brass had never been comfortable with the information industry.” Though TRW had control of the business for a long period of time, by the 1980s, there were indications that the information services division was not as well handled as it could have been. In 1984, someone hacked a consumer credit division account password and posted it on an electronic bulletin board.

Although the corporation acted swiftly to change the password and prevent any further disclosures of confidential credit information, the incident did little to improve TRW’s reputation. TRW appeared to be unsure about how to market itself to consumers as well. Consumers rarely confronted their credit reports unless there was an issue. TRW established a new consumer-oriented business, TRW Credentials Service, in 1986. For a $30 subscription, users may examine their credit histories once a year. Years later, TRW was compelled to offer consumers a free yearly credit report review.

The business completed a study on consumer perceptions of credit reporting in 1989. It discovered a plethora of issues and complaints. Even if consumers had negative experiences with another credit reporting bureau, TRW appeared to absorb the brunt of the criticism due to its size and prominence.

D. Van Skilling became president and chief executive officer of TRW’s Information Systems and Services division that year. Skilling’s career path reflected TRW’s dissatisfaction with the division. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and spent the Korean War in naval intelligence. Skilling then worked in a variety of capacities within TRW’s oil field equipment and industrial goods groups, including marketing.

Nothing in his experience equipped him for a career in information services, yet he rose to become the division’s head man. Skilling rapidly saw the inadequacy and inadequacy of the company’s computer systems. (Perhaps he received assistance with this.) Skilling said that he gave Bill Gates his only employment before he founded Microsoft.) Additionally, the consumer study’s findings indicated that much might be improved. Between 1989 and 1991, the corporation began investing in renovations, spending approximately $30 million. However, Skilling appears to have been incapable of making changes quickly enough or comprehensively enough to avert a public relations disaster.
