The Everett AquaSox will present “Local Heroes Night” on Friday, August 10th, to recognise those who had a good impact on the local community. One of those individuals is Mariners prospect Braden Bishop, who will be recognised for his efforts to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, particularly early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. The Mariners are even flying Bishop up from California, where he is mending a broken ulna. As an added treat, the first 1,000 fans will receive a bobblehead of Braden Bishop, replete with a small #4MOM tattoo on the forearm.

#4MOM began while Bishop was a Washington student-athlete; upon learning of his mother’s prognosis and desiring to do something to honour her, he took a strong black Sharpie and scribbled “#4MOM” on his forearm. The trend gained momentum among his teammates at UW, and Bishop carried it forward into his professional career. The inaugural 4MOM night at Everett took place in 2015, during Bishop’s first professional season; since then, he’s taken the message to Clinton, Bakersfield, Modesto, Little Rock, and Peoria, both as a member of the AFL’s Peoria Javelinas and in his first formal invitation to big-league camp.

Tickets for the game can be purchased here. Additionally, to showing up, supporting a worthy cause, and receiving a bobblehead, the Everett squad is quite entertaining to watch. The Sox won the NWL North’s first-half title, ensuring a playoff berth, and the team boasts a strong all-around offence led by 2018 second-round pick Josh Stowers (149 wRC+), third-round pick Cal Raleigh (154 wRC+), and the aptly named Bobby Honeyman (166 wRC+), who is currently leading the NWL in average and is coming off being named NWL Player of the Week.

Are you unable to make it to Everett? You may still show your support by purchasing a gorgeous tee (unisex, women’s, or youth) or hoodie through Bonfire’s #4MOM apparel challenge. With only four days remaining in the campaign, time is running out. Alternatively, you may donate directly to Braden’s partner foundation by clicking here.

If you choose that way, please take a screenshot and tag #TeamLL, as we are currently engaged in a fundraising competition with our friends from 710 ESPN: I believe the team who raises the least money will be compelled to wear maple syrup in the Big Maple Challenge tradition. I prefer my hair un-syrup, so if you could do us a favour and give, I would be really appreciative and will shower you with hugs and high fives at the next LL softball game.

Last season, the A affiliate finished with a.500 records and qualified for the postseason, losing 2-1 to the Spokane Indians in a best-of-three semi-final series. Everett’s roster, which is often dominated by newly drafted college players, also receives an injection of younger talents with big ceilings, and this year is no exception. The AquaSox will benefit from the talents of two players that were ranked in Major League Baseball’s Top 50 Organizational Prospects prior to the 2019 season: INF Cesar Izturis Jr. (#39) and RHP Damon Casetta-Stubbs (#39).

This year’s AquaSox club appears to be dominated by pitchers, led by the Mariners’ top two picks in the 2019 draught, as well as their fifth pick. Nine pitchers selected last week are on the opening day roster, with the possibility of adding more when the College World Series concludes.

1st-round pick in 2019 RHP George Kirby is Everett’s primary recruit, coming off a season in which he led all of NCAA Baseball in walk rate, granting only six free passes in 88.1 innings of activity. Kirby was recently named the CAA Conference Pitcher of the Year after going 8-2 with a 2.75 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 10.9 K/9, and 0.6 BB/9. The 6’4″ Rye, New York native logged 103.0 innings last summer between NCAA and Cape Cod League action, and he should be able to make a few outings with the AquaSox this summer.

MLB.com reports: LHP Brandon Williamson, the Mariners’ second-round pick (83rd overall) in the draught, joins Kirby as another early-round collegiate arm. Williamson was somewhat overshadowed on TCU’s pitching staff by fellow 6’6″ southpaw Nick Lodolo, who was drafted seventh overall by the Reds, but he has shown plenty of promise of his own.

Everett AquaSox Biography/Wiki

Williamson had a 4.48 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 9.9 K/9, and 4.5 BB/9 in his first season with the Horned Frogs after two years on the junior college circuit. He’s a bit more of a work in progress than the more polished Kirby, but with a mid-90’s heater, mid-80’s slider, curve, and change-up, he’s got quite the package if he can put it all together.

Tim Elliot, a Georgia Bulldogs alum and recent fourth-round pick, looks to join a talented Everett rotation brimming with individuals who have found success at the D-I level. From the pen of our own John Trupin:

Elliott is a 6’1″, 200-pound righty who works his heater at 90-94 mph and gets the majority of his whiffs on a late biting changeup. He’ll incorporate a slider and a curveball, although both may be improved. The distinction is one of track record and competition quality.  Elliott improved his command and emerged as one of the SEC’s better pitchers, if not the best midweek starter, with a 2.93 ERA and a 60/21 K/BB ratio in 61.0 innings in 13 starts.

At his best, Elliott has been ultra-efficient, tossing a CG SO Maddux against Florida Atlantic this year, but his low-90s velo, size, and lack of rotation experience all raise doubts about his ability to be a 4/5 starter or bullpen option.
