The fourth youngest of nine children, Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin, was born in the village of Dore (Irish Dobhar) in the Gweedore area of the Donegal County, North-West Ireland. She now lives in the south outskirts of Dublin, Killiney. The family is very musical and before settling down, their parents played in a family dance band. Her dad owns a local pub – Leo’s Meenaleck tavern – and her mother Baba teaches music at the local school. The band changed its name to Clannad and in 1973 recruited Sister Maire Brennan, making international success of their own and traditional materials. A number of albums have been recorded. Enya joined Clannad in 1980 and provided keyboards and (mostly) support vocals, credited with her true name. She appears on “Fuaim” in 1982.
In 1982, Clannad and its long-term manager and producer Nicky Ryan were separated. Eithne, apparently frustrated at being left behind, was simultaneously left and, in Ryan’s belief that she had talent at all, moved to live with Roma Ryan and his wife and to develop her own career. In 1985, film producer David Puttnam asked her to write music for his 1985 film The Frog Prince. Enya Ní Bhraonáin and Eithne’s transition to Enya (Eithne’s phonetic pronunciation) began with the titles on the Frog Prince (1985).
Career
In 1986, BBC-TV began working on a six-part documentary series to describe the Celts’ history and cultural influence. Enya was signed for the series to write and play music. Her ‘big break’ started in 1987 when she signed the album ‘Enya’ with Rob Dickins, head of WEA Music UK. WEA support made it possible to record “Watermark” and the album was released in 1988.The family is very musical and before settling down, their parents played in a family dance band. Although no singles were originally planned, Enya was brought to public attention by “Orinoco Flow” (“Sail Away”) and resulted in an unexpected chart #1 in several countries. With her next records, “ShepAs of summer 2003, never toured or performed a live concert. She continued her success. Most TV appearances were completed by her lip-synching or singing with her original recording.According to Enya, her music is virtually impossible to tour and live concert because of the logistics that try to replicate her sound on stage.

Enya is an approximate transliteration of how Eithne speaks her native language in the Donegal dialect of the Irish language. Enya (born Eithne Ní Bhraonáin) was born into a family of musicians. Her dad, Leo Brennan, was the leader of the popular Irish show band the Slieve Foy Band; her mom was an amateur musician. Her siblings, who formed Clannad in 1970 with several of their uncles, were most important for Enya’s career. Enya joined the band in 1980 as a keyboardist and contributed to several of the band’s popular TV sounds. In 1982, Clannad left, claiming that she was uninterested in following the group’s pop direction. Within a few years, she was commissioned to play for the score of a BBC-TV series called The Celts together with producer/arranger Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan. The soundtrack was published as her eponymous solo album in 1986.
