American band the Eagles, which developed country-rock as the dominant style and attitude of white youth in the United States in the 1970s. There were four initial members: Don Henley (born July 22, 1947), Glenn Frey (born November 6, 1948), Bernie Leadon (born July 19, 1947), and Randy Meisner (also born July 19, 1947). (b. March 8, 1946, Scottsbluff, Nebraska). Felder (September 21, 1947, in Topanga, California), Walsh (November 20, 1947, in Wichita, Kansas), and Schmit (December 2, 1947, in New York City) were the band’s later members (b. October 30, 1947, Sacramento, California).
Prior to the publication of their debut album in 1972, the Eagles worked with Linda Ronstadt, a professional pop performer residing in Los Angeles. Desperado, One of These Nights, and Take It Easy are just a few examples of Henley’s band’s ability to convey personal experiences via their music.
Nonetheless, the Eagles were happy just to stay inside the confines of certain musical styles and music industry traditions, pushing and expanding them at certain points along the road. Perhaps this desire to play by the rules was as important to the Eagles’ success as their hankering for the fiddles and dusty atmospheres of country music they polished for public consumption.
In Los Angeles in the late 1960s, country music was a popular alternative to rock ‘n’ roll. Millions of 1970s rock kids donned suede jackets and faded jeans to flirt with the California dream re-imagined as traditional Americana after they recorded the song, which became the soundtrack to their lives after they recorded it.
In this regard, Hotel California (1976) was the band’s greatest work. The Eagles’ music began as well-detailed melodies performed by Henley and Frey with a little nasality, just like any country singer’s approach to composition. When it came to the arrangements, the percussion was significantly more prominent than Nashville producers would have tolerated.
While working on Hotel California, the band was bolstered by ex-James Gang guitarist Walsh, who provided technical know-how along with his own brand of wildness. From One Of These Nights to The Long Run, his influence on the country-rock–pop fusion was unsurpassed, thanks to an increasingly confident blend of country directness and Hollywood studio calculating (1979).
In the middle of the band’s later period, Hotel California caught the band’s approach at its most comfortable and strong. Since then the Eagles’ sound faded away as punk and new wave followed country rock’s march from underground to mainstream.
Henley began a solo career in the 1980s as a more delicate singer-songwriter. “Boys of Summer” was an electropop smash in 1984, just like the Eagles had done in the 1970s when he embraced his time’s trends aesthetically. Many Nashville artists aspired to emulate the Eagles’ sound, even though it was never perfectly recreated.
Songs by Vince Gill and Travis Tritt were part of a tribute album released in 1993 called Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles that went on to become a huge hit in that genre. Four new songs were added to the group’s 1994 tour and record, which proved to be even more successful than the group’s previous reunion tour and album. The Eagles were enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
For Long Road Out of Eden (2007), the Eagles reunited for the first time in nearly three decades to record a new album. It was a huge success with both reviewers and fans, and it also marked a shift in the group’s the production and distribution paradigm.
The North American edition of the album was only available through the Eagles’ official website and Wal-Mart shops. Long Road Out of Eden’s “I Dreamed There Was No War” was awarded the Grammy for best pop instrumental performance in 2009. In 2013, the Eagles published a two-part documentary on their history.
It was in 2015 that the Kennedy Center named the Eagles as recipients, but Frey was ill and they postponed the honor until the following year. There were two 2017 reunion shows, with Deacon Frey replacing his father and Gill joining them this time. The Eagles resumed their tour in 2018.
