Donald Fagen Wiki/Bio

Donald Fagen was one of the two masterminds behind the seminal 1970s jazz pop band Steely Dan. Fagen’s solo work followed the band’s work in the early 1980s – carefully constructed and arranged, detailed pop songs that were more important than their designed surface could indicate. His 1982 solo debut, The Nightfly, was the best album he made during his lifetime and covered the same ground as the last two Steely Dan albums.

After The Nightfly was a success, Fagen had a case of a writer’s block; he contributed music for the remainder of the decade to the occasional movie and written a column for Premiere magazine shortly in the mid-eighties. The 1993 Kamakiriad sounded like Aja recorded with the ’90s technology with his former Steely Dan partner Walter Becker.

The adult charts had success, but it was overshadowed by the duo’s decision in nearly 20 years to reform Steely Dan and tour for the first time; the tour was a huge success. Another album, Everything Must Go, was released before Fagen decided to start working on his third solo album.

Career

Morph the Cat appeared in March 2006 with death as its main theme. Soon after the release of the album, Fagen began his first solo tour. It was the start of a long period of Fagen’s live performances. Steely Dan visited several of his classic albums back in 2009, when Fagen was a regular at Levon Helm’s Midnight Rambles in Woodstock, New York. In 2010, Fagen and Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs formed the touring blue-eyed soul review of the Dukes of September. The band had a second tournament in 2012, and Fagen released the lively Sunken Condos after its conclusion, its first album since Morph the Cat. The 1993 Kamakiriad sounded like Aja recorded with the ’90s technology with his former Steely Dan partner Walter Becker.

Do you ever wonder what the typical rock star thinks of on stage? Have you played the same songs a million times before? To the same crowd? Night after night? Night after night? Year after year? Year after year?

Donald Fagen, 65, cofounder of Steely Dan’s literate, aggressively dyspeptic jazz-rock mainstay, could not be a typical rock star’s idea. But decades into a successful career for uncovered thoughts of an iconic rock stalwart? Let us turn to the last half of the newly released book “Eminent Hipsters,” which has been published in the remarkable diary which Fagen kept with Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs on an old-fashioned 2012 tour. Or else, somewhere, now, in a supermarket, a Steely Dan song is playing. Some truths are obvious.

Late in the summer, while Steely Dan came to Ravinia for shows, Fagen spent some time talking about books, his strong thoughts on the stage, and hating rock music. When he walked out of his hotel in Gold Coast, his lips squeezed into a pancaked scowl. He didn’t like his photograph (“I don’t act”) or being recognised by fans (“I am suspicious of those who committed them”), but he didn’t like it either, either angry or caustic. He was simply himself, funny, busty, droll in skinny black dresses and white sneakers, a man whose notion (with Steely Dan Partner Walter Becker) of a nostalgic song that goes back to his old school promise: “The day I go back, California falls into the sea…”

Donald Fagen (born 10 January 1948, Passaic, NJ) trained at an early age in the classical piano and met the guitarist Walter Becker (born 5 February 1950), who studied English at Bard College. He and Becker, having a similar taste in classical jazz, decided to team up as musicians, and played Jay and the Americans as backup tour musicians. After ABC Records manager Gary Katz discovered them, they signed a recording contract under the name Steely Dan (taking the title “Naked Lunch”) with the aid of a number of studio musicians.
