Don Perkins Wiki/Bio

Known professionally as Donald Anthony Perkins, he was a former American football fullback who played with the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. He was also a basketball player. By the time he was a junior, Perkins had already risen to the position of team captain.

As a halfback who played both offense and defense for his undefeated football team in 1955, Perkins was named to the first All-State team in the state’s history. During his senior year, he served as the president of the student body.

Perkins went to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he was a two-way player who played halfback and defensive back as a college football player college. He was named to the Skyline All-Star team three times and was named Skyline Sophomore of the Year as a sophomore. In 1958, he was the most prolific kickoff returner in the country. In 1959, he was named to the third team of the All-American Football League.

Due to the Dallas Cowboys club being accepted to the league too late to participate in the 1960 NFL draught (in November 1959), they signed Perkins to a personal-services contract with a $1,500 bonus and a $10,000 salary in exchange for his services.

In 1968, he was instrumental in putting a stop to the Cowboys’ practice of separating players when they traveled to motels.

Perkins resigned at the end of 1968 having led all active players in running yards since the retirement of Jim Taylor, and he was the fifth-leading rusher in NFL history with 6,217 yards in his career. In 1976, he was put into the Texas Stadium Ring of Honor with his quarterback, Don Meredith, who was also enshrined. Only Bob Lilly was elected into the Hall of Fame before them, in 1975.

In 2006, he was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, where he continues to reside. Perkins was inducted into the PRFA Hall of Very Good for the 2016 season by the Professional Football Researchers Association.
