Dido Wiki/Bio

Electronic pop singer/songwriter Dido broke into the mainstream at the end of the ’90s and released two of the United Kingdom’s best selling albums ever. Her debut, No Angel of 1999, tops charts all over the world and sells more than 20 million copies. The follow-up, Life for Rent in 2003, also took place, backed up by its comforting blend of electronic and pastoral production, which had so far been heard on singles such as “Whites Flag.” While separated by extensive silence, each following release enriched her catalogue and helped make her one of the early 21st century’s most beloved English artists.

She joined the London Guildhall School of Music at the age of six, and at the time of her teenage years the budding musician had already mastered piano, violin and recording. She accepted a publishing job after touring with a classical ensemble in the UK. In the meantime she sang with a number of local groups before joining the Faithless trip-hop outfit – led by her older brother, the famous DJ and producer Rollo – in 1995. The band released their debut album Reverence the next year. More than 5 million copies were sold worldwide and Dido presented her new success as a solo deal with Arista Records.

Dido’s ethereal solo material combines acoustic pop and electronic elements. Her debut LP No Angel was released in mid-1999 and she supported the release in the summer, joining the Lilith Fair tour. However, her biggest break came in 2000, when rap superstar Eminem sampled one of her tracks, ‘Thank You.’ The result was a surprisingly touching song, and the demand for the original Dido rapidly increased. In early 2001 “Thank You” was turned to the Top Five, as was the accompanying No Angel, whose album sales amounted to 12 million copies worldwide when Dido returned to focus two years later.

She released her long-awaited follow-up Life for Rent in September 2003. The sophomore effort was characterised by personal difficulty and heartbreak, which marked one of Dido’s most honest materials. A long-awaited record, it became one of Britain’s fastest-selling albums, quickly moving home with multi-platinum and several million copies. After a world tour, Dido retreated in 2005 from the public eye to work on her third solo release. The album was also released in 2013 with the track “Let Us Move On” by Kendrick Lamar. After a hit that arrived later that year, Dido parted with the RCA and went away from the public for the next few years to create her next album.

In 2018, she came out with the single “hurricanes,” launching her fifth full-length rollout. In March 2019, Still on My Mind (BMG) released a collaboration with her brother, Rollo, with the additional single “Give You Up.”

Faithless. Her first solo effort, No Angel, brought her to the top of the charts and into the hearts of millions all over the world. Those who looked from outside seemed to have success over the night, but Dido’s stardom road in fact was a lifelong process.

Born and raised in London, she was the daughter of William Armstrong, a book publisher, and his wife, Claire, a hobbyist who wrote poetry. Her parents named her after a queen in Carthage. “Dido was an African queen, and she was a warrior queen in Latin literature, who actually ended up killing herself with a guy which was a bit depressing,” Dido told iAfrica.com.

Career

During her childhood, the Armstrong household had no TV and she found other ways to entertain herself. At the age of five, she stole a recording instrument from the lost school and discovered and discovered a passion for music. She practised for six hours a day and sometimes more without prompting her parents. She started attending the Guildhall School of Music in London the following year, where she added violin and piano to her talents. In June 2001, after almost two years on the road, Dido started its first tour as a headliner. She finally concluded her tour in support of No Angel in May 2002, and she found herself in a totally different place in her life from her starting point. “I was in my early 20s when I made No Angel and now I’m 30,” Dido told Corey Moss about VH1.com. “I’m a person totally different. My world changed. My world changed.”Dido discussed her early commitment in a Time Europe interview with Jeff Chu. “I’d like two hours of harmony and composition on each instrument, and perhaps an hour… I respect how I was when I was younger, because I’m not so cool now, “She said. She said.

As a young woman, Dido went to the UK with a classical music ensemble focused primarily on her chosen instruments. But at the age of 16, her focus began to change. She discovered Ella Fitzgerald’s music and became extremely interested in singing. Rollo, Dido’s brother, who had begun his own career in music, discouraged her from new direction. Sister Bliss, the Faithless lead singer, told people, “I used to tell Rollo that Dido had a lovely voice, and he looked at me and said, ‘My sister can not sing'”

Undaunted as her guerrilla name woman, Dido followed her dream and started to perform in London with a number of bands. She worked at the same time for a book publisher and attended a law school. She began publishing as an assistant and eventually became a literary agent.

Although she made good money as a literary agent, she decided to spend a year working her full-time music career with her supervisor’s blessing. Her boss assured her that if things didn’t work, she could have her old job back. She spent part of her new free time on Faithless tours and partly wrote and recorded her own songs. She signed a recording contract with the Arista label one year until the day after she left her job.Dido wrote a song for Britney Spears in 2001, “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” as Elton John witnessed her singing “Stan” at the Grammy Award ceremony with Eminem. “It was too surreal for me to watch Elton John sing my song,” Dido told Teen People’s Tom Lanham. “He is one of the world’s largest singer-songwriters. And he was there, singing my funny song.” Dido wrote a song for Britney Spears in 2001, “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” as Elton John witnessed her singing “Stan” at the Grammy Award ceremony with Eminem. “It was too surreal for me to watch Elton John sing my song,” Dido told Teen People’s Tom Lanham. “He is one of the world’s largest singer-songwriters. And he was there, singing my funny song.”Although no one in Arista had sent her demo tape, the record company invited her to meet with the company’s head, Clive Davis, at the London Dorchester Hotel. “I think my demo tape was driven by friends and words of mouth basically around the music industry,” said Dido to Time Europe’s Chu. It became evident that the meeting was a success when Davis was enthusiastic enough to spring into her performance with supporting voices.

She released her long-awaited follow-up Life for Rent in September 2003. In June 1999, Dido released her debut, No Angel, in the USA. It was also accompanied by the single “Here With Me,” which later was selected as the theme of the WB TV show “Roswell.” With the help of his brother, Rollo, Rick Nowels (who had become one of her biggest supporters), and former Verve and Crowded House producer Youth, Dido produced the album. Christopher John Farley wrote: “Dreamy pop, electronic shading, folk guitars, and soulful vocals blend together on No Angel. Dido appeared on the second Faithless release that same year, Sunday at 8pm, including her track “My Lover’s Gone.”

Dido had to wait for No Angel’s release to Europe in October 2000 due to contractual disputes with her European label, Cheeky Records. The CD was released after the small label was bought by BMG Records. No Angel’s success did not come quickly in the United States. Dido toured little places throughout the country until one day she received a letter from rapist Eminem explaining that he wanted to show her tunes “Thank You” in a song he worked on, “Stan.” He included a CD with the song to hear how he used it. “Thank You” already appeared for the film Sliding Doors, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, at this time on the soundtrack. Dido gave Eminem permission to use the sample—a choice that started her career as a superstar.

“I’m blown away by the fact that so many people have decided to investigate or to buy my record by hearing six lines on ‘Stan,'” Dido said in her biography of her website. “That’s brilliant, I think.” This brilliance resulted in No Angel spending 100 weeks in British album charts and selling over 12 million copies.Dido’s ethereal solo material combines acoustic pop and electronic elements. Before Dido returned to the studio to record her second album, she decided to spend some time in New York, Thailand, Canada, Ireland etc. She released Life for Rent on 29 September 2003, refreshed and ready to start again. The album included the singular “White Flag,” and David Boreanaz, star of the Angel TV show, was invited to appear for the video of that song.

On life for rent, Dido approached her songwriting more philosophically, especially on the title track. “This is about not being afraid of taking chances or of living a full life,” Dido said in her biography of her website.
