Dianne Feinstein, née Dianne Emiel Goldman, is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 1992 and began representing California later that year. She was born on June 22, 1933, in San Francisco, California. She was the first woman elected to that state’s senate. Feinstein served as San Francisco’s first female mayor from 1978 to 1988.
Goldman grew up in the affluent Presidio Terrace neighbourhood of San Francisco. She went to public school until eighth grade, then transferred to an elite Roman Catholic high school, the Convent of the Sacred Heart High School, where she was the only Jewish student. She enrolled at Stanford University in 1951, initially as a premedical student, later as a political science and history major. She interned with the Coro Foundation in San Francisco after graduating with a B.S. degree in 1955. The Coro Foundation’s purpose was to give young people with political experience. She married Jack Berman in 1956 and had a daughter, who went on to become a judge, before divorcing in 1959. She married Bertram Feinstein three years later, who died in 1978. Dianne Blum married Richard C. Blum in 1980.
Feinstein served on the California Women’s Board of Terms and Parole from 1960 to 1966. She chaired the Advisory Committee on Adult Detention in San Francisco from 1966 to 1968, and she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1969. She was the board’s first female president (1970–71, 1974–75, 1978) and served in this position for nine years.
Career
She ran for mayor of San Francisco twice, unsuccessfully in 1971 and 1975. When Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk were slain in 1978, Feinstein took over as mayor and head of the Board of Supervisors. The followers of Jim Jones, the majority of whom were former Bay Area residents, had committed mass suicide in their Guyana base just days before the assassinations.
Feinstein’s leadership at this trying period in the city’s history garnered her widespread admiration and support. In 1979, she was elected mayor for the first time and served until 1988. She received excellent marks for improving city services like as garbage collection and transportation while in office, as well as for advocating for homosexual rights.
In 1982, however, she voted against a bill that would have given registered domestic partners access to some benefits, such as insurance, and as a result, she lost a significant portion of her constituency. During her time in office, Feinstein authored laws prohibiting the manufacturing, sale, and possession of semiautomatic military combat weapons, as well as the California Desert Protection Act, which called for the protection of over 3 million acres (1.2 million hectares) of desert, national parks, and nature reserves. She continued to focus on criminal justice and environmental issues throughout her career.
She served on the Senate Judiciary Committee, where she was the first female member, the Appropriations Committee, the Rules and Administration Committee, and the Select Committee on Intelligence during her time in the Senate. Feinstein became the first woman to chair the Senate Rules and Administration Committee when the Democrats won control of the Senate in 2007.
