Diana Ross Wiki/Bio

Former lead vocalist of the Supremes and solo artist Diana Ross was born Diane Earle on March 26, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, United States. She rose to fame as a pop singer and actress in the United States and abroad.

Ross’ professional singing career began in 1959 when she formed the pop-soul vocal group the Primettes with five neighborhood friends. After earning a recording contract with Motown in the following year, the group adopted the name Supremes.

A decade of chart-topping success in several genres followed Ross’ release of the single “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” from her debut album Diana (1970). Her major singles include “Love Hangover” (1976) and “Upside Down” (1980), and her duet with Lionel Richie of the Commodores, “Endless Love” (1981), which topped the pop, R&B, and adult contemporary charts of Billboard magazine. Her acting career took off in the 1970s when she starred as blues singer Billie Holiday in the film Lady Sings the Blues and went on to star in Mahogany, for which she also recorded the classic song “Do You Know Where You’re Going To,” and in The Wiz (1976), both of which were musical comedies (1978).

Ross’s commercial success began to diminish in the mid-1980s after riding a wave of hit singles. After a time in pop and R&B, her music began to lean more disco-like, and most of her albums were compilations of older stuff. For the next year’s promotional tour for the album, she released I Love You, a collection of her own renditions of love songs by various musicians that was released in 2006. A famous concert performer far into the early 21st century despite her lack of chart success, Ross maintained her place as one of the most talented musicians of her day. By performing with the group, they were honored by being given an honorary star on their Hollywood Walk of Fame bio. A Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award went to Ross in 2012, as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the following year.

a Grammy, an award given yearly by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS; usually known as the Recording Academy) or the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (LARAS; commonly known as the Latin Recording Academy) to honor excellence in the music industry.

Over 25 categories are judged for the Grammys, encompassing everything from pop to rock to rap to R&B to the country to reggae to classical to gospel to jazz to postproduction work like record packaging and liner notes. More than 75 awards are given out in all, including four general ones for best record, best album, best song, and best new artist. The winners are presented with a golden gramophone figurine.

Recordings and music videos that were released in the United States between October 1 of the prior year and midnight on September 30 of the Grammy year are eligible for nomination by NARAS. Both record labels and academy members are allowed to submit entries, which are then examined to determine eligibility and placement in categories. In a series of ballots, NARAS voting members choose five nominees for each award and then the winner; voters only vote in their own fields of expertise. There is a televised event where the winners are revealed.

NARAS originally handed out the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in 1959, with 28 different prizes being given out. Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and the Kingston Trio were among the award winners. As new musical subgenres have evolved, so has the number of Grammy Awards. The academy first recognized rock in 1980 and wrap in 1989 as distinct genres. In recognition of the expanding influence of the medium, the first award was given in 1982 for the best music video. 2011 saw a major restructuring of the Grammy category system, resulting in a reduction of prizes from 109 to 78. Categories based on gender and those that differentiated between solo and group activities were removed. A new category called “regional roots music” was created to honor Hawaiian, Native American, and Zydeco music, while instrumental categories were eliminated. After a few further tweaks, the number of prizes has settled at 84 by 2017.

NARAS formed LARAS in 1997 in response to the growing popularity of Latin music. A recording can be eligible for a Latin Grammy regardless of where it is released, as long as it was recorded between July 1 of the previous year and June 30 of the award year in Spanish or Portuguese. Shakira and Carlos Santana won the first Latin Grammy Awards, which were held in Los Angeles in 2000.

Career

When an artist wins a Grammy, their record sales go up, and they become more well-known. Sir Georg Solti (32 Grammys), Quincy Jones, Alison Krauss, Stevie Wonder, and Chet Atkins are among the Grammy winners.

Diana Ross is without a doubt a legend. She rose to fame with the Supremes, a singing group that rose from humble beginnings in the 1960s to become a Motown powerhouse and one of the industry’s most successful recording acts ever. The singer left the band in 1970 and went on to have a string of solo successes, including more than a dozen Top 40 pop singles. Pop-soul, disco, and adult contemporary ballads “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” (1970), “Love Hangover” (1976), and “Upside Down” (1980) all made the top ten, as did “Endless Love” (1981).

Regardless of the genre or the subject matter, Ross has always radiated a rare sense of glitz and composure, sounding utterly immersed in her work while displaying a steely resolve even in the most heartbreaking of love settings. As a result of her work with and without the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-inducted Supremes, as well as her involvement in the Academy Award-nominated film Lady Sings the Blues, Diana Ross was nominated for 12 Grammy Awards, including the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy. Diana Ross: Her Life, Love, and Legacy, a documentary honoring her still-thriving six-decade career, was released in 2019; her 25th solo album, Thank You, will be released in 2021.

Diane Ernestine Earle Ross, with the exception of a brief stay in Bessemer, Alabama, was raised in Detroit, Michigan, her hometown. Her time with the Primettes, who later became the Supremes, began immediately after their 1959 migration to the city’s Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects.

The Motown trio had a dozen number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart between 1964 and 1969, starting with “Where Did Our Love Go?” With Grammy-nominated songs like “Baby Love” and “Stop in the Name of Love,” they followed it up with the instant classic “Reflections,” by which time they were known as Diana Ross and the Supremes, and ended their run with “Someday We’ll Be Together.” Meanwhile, the Supremes established themselves as one of the most popular musical acts of all time.

In January 1970, Ross made her final appearance with the Supremes, preparing for a solo career. Diana Ross, the singer’s solo debut, was released by Motown in June of that year. It generated big songs like “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” and a reworking of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” which was written and produced nearly solely by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson.

It topped Billboard’s Hot 100 and R&B charts, earning Ross a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Vocal Performance, Female. Diana!, the chart-topping soundtrack of the Motown-produced film of the same name, and Surrender (both 1971-1972) swiftly followed and were overshadowed by the chart-topping Lady Sings the Blues (1972). Ross was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as Billie Holiday in her feature film acting debut.

The albums Touch Me in the Morning, Diana & Marvin, and Last Time I Saw Him by Marvin Gaye (all 1973) came quickly after. The song composed by Michael Masser and Ron Miller, “Touch Me in the Morning,” was the biggest hit of the three.

As Ross’ second solo No. 1, the song was nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Performance in the pop category. Before the love drama Mahogany, another big-screen Motown production with Ross as the principal character, Live at Caesars Palace (1974) served as a stopgap for Ross’ solo concert career.

His breathy vocals and genuine stage presence worked well with the disco’s bouncy beats. Another easy transition was “Love Hangover,” written by Marilyn McLeod and Pamela Sawyer and produced by Hal Davis. On the disco and R&B/pop charts, it ranked number one, sending its predecessor, Diana Ross (1976), to the Top Ten. It also earned Diana Ross her fourth Grammy nomination for a performance-related song.

Richard Perry produced Baby, It’s Me (1977), the singer’s follow-up album before he helped rejuvenate the Pointer Sisters. One of the album’s three charting B-sides, “Your Love Is So Good for Me,” aimed at dancefloors and earned Ross another Grammy nomination for best pop vocal performance. Ross (1978) followed, with a mix of brand-new material and remastered versions of previously unreleased songs from earlier in the decade.
