Dee Dee Bridgewater Wiki/Bio

Dee Dee Bridgewater was born to Marion and Matthew Garrett in Memphis, Tennessee. They moved to Flint, Michigan, where Dee Dee lived until high school was completed. She began singing with neighbourhood jazz bands and school talent events. She began singing with big bands during the first years of her college, which led her to work with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Band. She met and married Cecil Bridgewater, a trumpeter/composer. The couple had a child and were divorced after visiting the US, Europe, the USSR and Japan. Dee Dee was later awarded a Tony Award for Glinda’s role in the Broadway version of “The Wiz.” Then she married director Gilbert Moses and relocated to Los Angeles to perform and create multiple hit albums. She has a child with Gilbert. The pair went to Virgina Beach, Virginia, where she starred in “A Different World” soap. When the pair returned to Los Angeles, Dee Dee had a key role in the “Sophisticated Ladies” (Gregory Hines, Hinton Battle and others) production in the LA. Dee Dee remained on the globe tour with the group. When Dee Dee left her second husband, she moved to Paris, France, and revived her jazz career. Since her migration to Europe she has garnered two Grammy awards for her tribute CD “Dear Ella” and was acknowledged as a creative force in the world of jazz. Dee Dee now lives with her spouse in France and has three kids.

Only a few entertainers in every genre have ever controlled such depth of art. Fewer have still been recognised with Broadway’s popular Tony Award (The Wiz), nominated for the London West End Theater, Laurence Oliver Award (the best actress in a musical – Lady Day) and two Grammy Awards (1998’s Best Jazz Vocal and Best Arrangement Companying a Vocal for “Cottontail” – Slide Hampton, arrangement – “Dear Ella”) and F. (Best Jazz Vocal Album).

She immersed in her music before she could walk as a shining ambassador for jazz. Her mother played Ella Fitzgerald’s greatest records, the artist of which inspired Dee Dee throughout her career. Her dad was a trumpeter who taught music, including Booker Little, Charles Lloyd and George Coleman. This is the kind of background which marks a teenager, particularly one who appeared alone and independent as soon as she could. The other career of Dee Dee, globetrotter, reared its head when she visited the Soviet Union in 1969 together with the Illinois Jazz Band University. A year later, she followed Cecil Bridgewater, her then husband, to New York.

Career

Dee makes her remarkable debut in New York in 1970 as the band’s leading vocalist, led by Thad Jones and one of the first jazz orchestras of the day, Mel Lewis. Those years have marked the beginning of a career in performances and recordings with luminaries such as Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Max Roach and Roland Kirk and extensive experiences with Norman Connors, Stanley Clarke and the Loud Minority of Frank Foster.

Dee Dee doesn’t care much about labels, and in 1974 her voice, beauty and stage presence gained a huge success, and the Tony Award for her part as Glinda the Good Witch of The Wiz, to play and sing at Broadway. This began a long run of awards and awards as well as chances of working in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Paris and London, and won the coveted ‘Laurence Olivier’ award in Stephen Stahl’s Lady Day for her tour de force depiction of the jazz legend Billie Holiday. In performing as demanding performers as Sophisticated Ladies, Cosmopolitan Greetings, Black Ballad, Carman Jazz and the musical Cabaret, she earned her name as an accomplished entertainer and became the first black actress to play as Sally Bowles.

Dee Dee joined the fight against world hunger in October 1999. Appealing for international solidarity to finance global grassroots projects, FAO ambassadors are helping to build self-reliance on sustainable agriculture and long-term conservation and management, as well as on rural development and natural resource conservation and management.

Dee Dee continues to give listeners her message. NPR’s JazzSet© is the Jazz lover’s ears and eyes in the world of live music, together with Dee Dee Bridgewater. It features today’s top jazz performers on scenes worldwide, bringing listeners to Puerto Rico and Cuba, as well as to Marciac in France and across the North American continent from Montreal to Monterey.
