Dax Shepard Wiki/Bio
David Randall Shepard was born in 1975 in Milford, Michigan, to Laura (LaBo) Shepard, who worked at General Motors, and Dave Robert Shepard, Sr., who worked in the automobile sales industry. His mother is of French-Canadian and Belgian origin, and he was raised by her. Dax’s first love was vehicles, which he inherited from his parents, who both worked in the automotive sector.
With a 1993 high school diploma in hand, Shepard made the move from Walled Lake to California in 1995. He received his B.A. in Anthropology from UCLA with honors, graduating magna cum laude. During his time at UCLA, he received improv and sketch comedy training at The Groundlings Theater in Los Angeles. Having auditioned for eight years, Dax was finally cast in Punk’d, which was his first paid acting role. What you want is for your demographic to finally reach the age of sexual maturity, which is your own. Mine is getting lower and lower all the time. For example, Punk’d was geared toward 13-year-old girls, and now I’m focusing on 7-year-olds.
I’ve worked in a variety of low-wage occupations throughout the years, but acting is the only profession to which I’ve ever truly dedicated myself. It’s my way of life.
When I moved to Los Angeles, I was 20 years old. I went on approximately 600 commercial auditions and didn’t get cast in any of them, despite my best efforts. I went through the Groundlings as a part of my training. Everyone there, with the exception of me, was represented, and it was a wonderfully amazing group. I was in attendance with Melissa McCarthy, who was nominated for an Academy Award; Octavia Spencer, who was awarded an Academy Award; and Tate Taylor, the director of The Help. Success is nothing more than a battle of attrition. Sure, there’s a certain amount of talent you should undoubtedly have, but if you stick around long enough, something will ultimately happen, don’t you think?
I just enjoyed being fucked up in every way I could — drinking, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, diet pills, pain meds, whatever. My main vices were Jack Daniel’s whiskey and cocaine. When I was younger, I was well-known for going out on Thursday nights to have a couple of beers, and this continued all the way until Saturday night. Every now and then, I’d meet someone, and then I’d find myself in a hotel room with four other individuals I didn’t know. Oh, they’re putting their feet up? Someone new has arrived, to put it mildly. Yes, I’d be interested in going dancing. Going down the rabbit hole of meeting strange individuals was something I looked forward to every day.
Of course, on Monday, I’d be adding up all of the different situations, each of which was becoming increasingly dangerous. I was fortunate in that I did not end myself in prison… Because of a drunken scuffle, my nose is fully turned sideways. Because of a drunken altercation, I’m missing a knuckle on my right hand. I was generally able to stay sober long enough to get to work. My first film, Without a Paddle, was shot while I was sober, but after that, I was screwed up. I was clean in time for Idiocracy, but then I was fucked up for three months after the filming of the show.
Afterward, I knew I’d have to be clean before starting Zathura, so I went to Hawaii for a few days of relaxation, and that’s when things started to go from bad to worse for me. I was involved in a car accident with a local while on our way to buy coke, but it didn’t stop us from going out and getting it. Then it wasn’t coked I was doing, it was crystal meth, but I still did it.
The fact that you turn 18 and are officially unleashed into the world and then immediately begin to accumulate bad habits is bizarre. From the ages of 18 to 29, I was a heavy smoker, a heavy drinker, a drug addict, a bad eater, and a philanderer, to name a few vices. The past eight years, since I became clean, have been devoted to attempting to peel back each of those habits, in order to reclaim the 12-year-old kid inside who was giddy with anticipation for the future.
I’m from Detroit, and I’ve spent my entire life behind the wheel of automobiles. Drag racing was popular during high school. Then I went to work for General Motors since my mother owned a company that organized large automobile exhibits for journalists. The Michigan International Speedway would be rented out to us, and I’d get a tonne of seat time in these insane cars that a 16-year-old should never be permitted to operate. Cars are my favorite thing in the world.
When asked if his expectations of success were met, he replied, “Yes.” Oh my God, no, but it’s impossible to know until you’ve achieved success whether or not it has any impact on your everyday struggles. At one point in my life as a struggling Groundling, I fantasized about living in a world where there was no need for toothpaste and I could live off the calories from cupcakes all day. I have to do the same things I’ve always had to do to keep from feeling terrible, which is work out, journal, eat well and do something for someone other than myself at some point every day-even if it’s just the dogs, those little fuckers-in order to keep from feeling awful.
