The Dave Ramsey Show is a three-hour self-syndicated radio show and podcast anchored by the eponymous finance author and speaker that broadcasts Monday through Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. ET. It’s coming to you live from Franklin, Tennessee. It is one of the top five most-listened-to radio shows as of 2020.
Ramsey takes live calls on the topic of banking, as well as money-related Christian philosophy, such as tithing, and so on. On the program, he speaks with callers about life and money-related topics. He is well-known for his contempt for debt collectors, referring to them as “scum” and “dishonest,” and advising his listeners not to work with them until absolutely necessary, and then to get it in writing, especially when it comes to debt reduction deals.
Ramsey’s show started on June 15, 1992, when he was a guest on 99.7 WWTN, selling copies of Financial Peace from the trunk of his car. The channel had previously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and one of its hosts had resigned due to nonpayment, leaving the station struggling to cover the void in its schedule. Ramsey offered to do a one-hour show for free for a month, knowing full well that he would not be good.
The Money Game premiered, with Ramsey, Hal Wilson, and Roy Matlock each hosting an hour on different days of the week. On Mondays and Wednesdays, Ramsey was the bankruptcy and “get out of debt” expert, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Matlock was the trading expert, and Fridays were devoted to real estate. Ramsey and Matlock paired up to host the show five days a week after station management asked Wilson to leave his part of the show. Matlock eventually quit the show amicably to concentrate on his financial management career, leaving Ramsey to host the show on his own.
In Nashville, the show became very successful. When WWTN asked Ramsey who will syndicate his program, he reportedly merely pointed to Blake Thompson, who is also the show’s executive producer today. “They taught syndication from the ground up,” said Bill Hampton, Vice President of The Lampo Group.
In mid-1996, The Money Game was renamed The Dave Ramsey Show. By 2020, the broadcast will be heard on over 600 radio stations. The show was nominated for two 2006 Radio & Records News/Talk Industry Achievement Awards in 2006. It’s Dave Ramsey’s fifth year in a row in the “Syndicated Personality of the Year” category, and Bill Hampton’s second year in a row in the “Executive of the Year” category.
Bill Hampton reported that the show made $2.5 million in network revenue in 2005, while MyTMMO.com made $1.2 million. He also reported that sponsors would contribute $3.7 million to the broadcast. The show is now available on iTunes as a podcast.
Ramsey’s show is one of the few self-syndicated network radio programs. The software is transmitted exclusively to local stations and is not related to any central network or programming service. Ramsey’s show is fed to stations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, meaning stations don’t have to record it for later transmission and can instead rely on the satellite feed. Westwood One’s satellite channel is used to broadcast the programme.
After 20 years on WTN, the show was moved to 102.5 FM on January 1, 2013. (“The Game”). Ramsey and WTN were unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension. The broadcast was switched to WLAC a year later, on January 1, 2014.
