Dan Bern is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, novelist and artist from America. He has compared his music with Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Ochs and Elvis Costello. He’s an excellent composer, over a thousand songs have been written. Under the pseudonym Cunliffe Merriwether he wrote the novel Escape from Science and wrote the preface on his own behalf.
Bern left his home in the Midwest, L.A. with an acoustic guitar, a batch of sharp, witty, insightful songs, and a delivery that recalled the man himself, where he attacked the local folk scene. He then went to various clubs and festivals nationwide, where he got a great deal of notice and at last caught the attention of the subsidiary of the Sony Records Working Group, with whom he made a deal. Later in 1997, Work released Dog Boy Van, his excellent 1996 independent release, recorded before his label signature.
Fifty Eggs (produced by Ani DiFranco) was a proper follow- up to Dan Bern in March 1998, while the independent Smartie Mine two-CD set was released later that year. Bern was no longer a Midwest resident but settled in New Mexico at the beginning of 2002. The next spring appeared to be Fleeting Days. In 2004, Bern released My Country II, the politically accused EP. The full-length Breathe was followed in 2006.

Mount Vernon, Iowa, United States of America. Dan learned to play cello as a youth before he was inspired by Bob Dylan to take the guitar and start to write his own songs. He moved to the west coast and made a name for himself on the local anti-grass roots scene. His literate and reflexive songwriting attracted a cult following, prompting Bern and the self-released Dog Boy Van to make his recording debut in 1996. This six-track EP introduced Bern’s modus operandi with songs that cast a furious eye on American pop culture and the individual foibles of the singer. Hypothesized in the new Bob Dylan press, Bern’s high profile meant the successful signing of a major label recording contract, with Bern’s signature at Sony Records’ Work Group imprint.
His self-titles long-time debut was a success of the singer-songwriter form with the many highlights of ‘Jerusalem,’ ‘Go To Sleep’ and ‘Marilyn.’ Ani DiFranco produced the follow-up, Fifty eggs, which typically included skewed Tiger Woods and Monica Seles tennis players. The Smartie Mine paid testament to Bern’s prolific performance that same year, which lasted for over two hours and included 21 new originals, three blues coverings, the duet Martha Wainwright and new versions of ‘Tiger Woods’ and ‘One Thing Real’ from Fifty Eggs.
Bern switched to the 2001 New American Language Messenger label and created a more comprehensive band sound with Bruce Springsteen’s producer Chuck Plotkin than with previous releases. The closer album ‘Thanksgiving Day Parade’ paid direct tribute to Dylan’s epics, ‘Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands’ and ‘Desolation Row,’ which created a modern American work of image and character from a kaleidoscope.
