CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was born on December 21, 1972, in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, India. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Y. S. Vijayamma gave birth to Jaganmohan Reddy. He was a student at The Hyderabad Public School until the 12th grade. He completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
On August 28, 1996, he married Bharathi Reddy. The couple has two daughters, the eldest of whom is an undergraduate at a university in London. He was raised up in a Christian home.
His younger sister, Y. S. Sharmila, is also a politician. Reddy founded Sakshi, a Telugu daily newspaper, and Sakshi TV, a Telugu television channel. He is the chief promoter of Bharathi Cements.
Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, abbreviated as YSR, was Jaganmohan Reddy’s father and served as Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister twice, from 2004 to 2009. Jaganmohan Reddy started his political career as a campaigner for the Indian National Congress during the 2004 elections in Kadapa district. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009, representing the Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency.
Jaganmohan Reddy started attempts to carry on his father’s political legacy after his father’s death in September 2009. The majority of lawmakers supported his appointment as Chief Minister, but the party’s leaders, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, were opposed.
As he had expected, six months after his father’s death, he began an odarpu yatra (condolence tour) to meet the families of those accused of committing suicide or becoming ill after hearing of his father’s death. He disobeyed an order from the Congress party’s central leadership to call off his odarpu yatra, resulting in a schism between him and the high command. Despite his objections, he continued the yatra, saying that it was a private matter.
In Andhra Pradesh, the YSR Congress Party dominated the polls, claiming 151 of the total 175 assembly seats and 22 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the April and May 2019 national and state elections. He was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 30, 2019. His tenure as chief minister has been marked by a slew of welfare initiatives, including Amma Vodi, a fund that assists mothers in educating their children.
He also cancelled the former TDP government’s plans for a single capital in Amaravati, proposing instead three independent capitals in Kurnool, Amaravati, and Visakhapatnam for the judicial, administrative, and legislative branches, respectively. Farmers in Amaravati reacted angrily to the initiative.
