Clint Eastwood Wiki/Bio
A. Clint Eastwood Jr. (born May 31, 1930, in San Francisco, California, U.S.) is an American actor, director, and producer who rose to stardom in the 1960s as one of Hollywood’s most popular actors.
During the Korean conflict, he was recruited and sent to California as a military prisoner of war. Eastwood settled in Hollywood in 1953 after being honorably discharged from the military. An audition at Universal Studios in 1954 led to a 40-week contract, but after one renewal and a string of small roles in films like Tarantula (1955) and Revenge of the Creature (1955), his option was withdrawn from consideration for the role. His first major break came in 1959 when he was hired as Rowdy Yates in the hit TV western Rawhide (1959–65).
It was also during this time that Clint Eastwood became an international star as The Man with No Name, a laconic and fearless gunfighter who hides his brutality behind laconicism, in three Sergio Leone-directed spaghetti westerns: Per un Pugno di dollari in 1964; A Fistful of Dollars; Per qualche dollar in più; For a Few Dollars More; and Il Buono Brutto, il cattivo in 1965. The three pictures, which were released in the United States in 1967, were commercial triumphs right away, making Clint Eastwood a household name.
Eastwood’s family relocated several times during the Great Depression until settling in Piedmont, California, in 1940. During the Korean conflict, he was recruited and sent to California as a military prisoner of war. Eastwood settled in Hollywood in 1953 after being honorably discharged from the military.
An audition at Universal Studios in 1954 led to a 40-week contract, but after one renewal and a string of small roles in films like Tarantula (1955) and Revenge of the Creature (1955), his option was withdrawn from consideration. Before playing Rowdy Yates in the iconic TV western Rawhide (1959–65), he appeared in a number of other shows on television.
As a result of his performances as “The Man with No Name,” a stoic gunfighter who hides his brutality behind his laconic demeanor, Eastwood became an international star in three Sergio Leone-directed spaghetti westerns: Per un Pugno di dollari (1964), Per qualche dollar in più (1965), and Il Buono, brutto, cattivo (1966).
The three pictures, which were released in the United States in 1967, were commercial triumphs right away, making Clint Eastwood a household name.
Hang ‘Em High (1968) was director Ted Post’s superb copy of the Leone model, spiced by a strong cast of supporting players. For this film, Eastwood established his own production company, Malpaso. It was Don Siegel, who taught Eastwood much of the things he needed to know about directing, on the popular police story Coogan’s Bluff (1968). Eastwood regularly recognized his appreciation to Siegel for this.
Also, he collaborated with Siegel on the western Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), the psychological Civil War drama The Beguiled (1971), and the prison-break thriller Escape from Alcatraz (1976). (1979). When they worked together on Dirty Harry (1971), Eastwood became the first actor to depict vicious police inspector Harry Callahan on screen. There were four sequels to the picture, and Dirty Harry became a movie star because to his no-nonsense persona and catchphrases like “Go ahead, make my day.”
After acting in such films as Play Misty for Me (1971), High Plains Drifter (1972), and The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), Eastwood began directing. He also starred in The Eiger Sanction (1975) and the spy picture The Eiger Sanction (1972).
A Missouri farmer is driven to violence when his family is massacred by rogue Union soldiers in Eastwood’s 1976 western The Outlaw Josey Wales, which he took over from Philip Kaufman, who scripted it. This film humanized Clint Eastwood’s epic avenger persona for the first time with stylish photography by Bruce Surtees and a superb performance by Chief Dan George as a Cherokee elder.
The Gauntlet (1977) saw Eastwood as a police detective trying to convey a witness (Sondra Locke) to an Arizona courthouse so she can testify. It was a kinetic but formulaic action film. As a two-bit Wild West show owner who takes sanctuary to, then falls in love with, a fugitive heiress in Bronco Billy (1980), Eastwood was skilled as a far cry from the mayhem of his westerns and cop pictures (Locke).
A Cold War thriller starring Clint Eastwood in a supersonic heist from the Soviets, Firefox was released in 1982. Eastwood played a tuberculosis-stricken country singer who longs to perform at the Grand Ole Opry one last time in Honkytonk Man (1982), a quirky and emotional period piece set during the Great Depression.
In Sudden Impact (1983), Eastwood directed the fourth Dirty Harry film, starring Gary Locke as a rape victim on a furious murder rampage, having strayed quite a distance from his famous action persona.
After that, he went back to his roots in the film with the neo-mythic western Pale Rider (1985), which was also a spiritual film. As one of the rare 1980s blockbuster westerns, it featured Clint Eastwood’s recognisable presence and stunning photography by John Surtees.
