The Insurance Company of North America was founded in Philadelphia, then the nation’s financial capital and biggest port, at a time when the country was only beginning to develop economically. He maintained the office in less-than-ideal circumstances, remaining in Philadelphia during the 1793 yellow fever epidemic. In 1794, the Pennsylvania state government founded the Insurance Company of North America and permitted it to write marine, fire, and life insurance.
Initially, the corporation covered just ship hulls and cargoes engaged in domestic and international commerce. However, in late 1794, INA’s board and officers agreed to insure buildings and their contents against fire, making it the first firm in the United States to do so.
INA followed the pioneers west in the early nineteenth century. INA established the American agency system in 1807 with the establishment of its first agency in Lexington, Kentucky. The corporation appointed independent agents to the Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee frontiers. INA, betting on westward expansion, invested in toll bridges and toll roads, as well as bonds issued by the newly acquired Louisiana Territory.
INA’s westward growth helped the corporation stay afloat during a period of financial distress in its maritime insurance division. The difficulties began in 1799, when Great Britain began seizing American ships at sea.
