Chris Murphy, full name Christopher Scott Murphy, is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2012 and began representing Connecticut in that body the following year. Murphy was born on August 3, 1973, in White Plains, New York. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2013.
Murphy was born in a New York City suburb. His family moved to a suburb of Hartford, Connecticut, while he was a child, where his father had a legal practise. He graduated from Williams College in 1996 with bachelor’s degrees in history and political science, as well as a year of study abroad at the University of Oxford. Murphy went on to the University of Connecticut to study law (J.D., 2002), where he met Catherine Holahan. Later, in 2007, the couple married and had two children.
Career
Murphy was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives while still a student in 1998, where he served from 1999 to 2003. He then served in the California Senate from 2003 to 2006, where he was assistant senate majority leader during his final year in office. Murphy supported various socially progressive projects while in the Connecticut assembly, including successful efforts to enhance the state’s auto-emissions standards, outlaw indoor smoking in public areas and restaurants, and promote the cause of civil unions and finally marriage equality. He also practised law in Hartford at the time, concentrating in real estate.
Murphy ran for the United States House of Representatives in 2006 and was elected the following year. In 2012, he ran for the United States Senate and defeated Republican Linda McMahon, who was running for the second time in as many years. Murphy was elected to the Senate in 2013.
