Chevron Corporation, also known as Standard Oil Company (California) (1906–11), Standard Oil Co. (California) (1911–26), Standard Oil Company of California (Socal) (1926–84), and ChevronTexaco Corporation (2001–05), is a U.S. petroleum corporation founded in 1906 as a result of a merger between Pacific Oil Company and Standard Oil Company of Iowa. It bought Gulf Oil Corporation in 1984, Texaco Inc. in 2001, and Unocal Corporation in 2005, making it one of the world’s largest oil firms. Chevron is involved in all aspects of the petroleum industry, including exploration, production, and refining, as well as marketing and research. It also makes a variety of petrochemicals and polymers, owns coal and mineral mining operations, and generates geothermal energy. The company’s headquarters are located in San Ramon, California.

Chevron’s roots may be traced back to 1879, when the Pacific Coast Oil Company was founded, eventually becoming California’s largest oil producer and refiner. Pacific Coast Oil was purchased by the Standard Oil Company (see Standard Oil Company and Trust) in 1900, and six years later it was amalgamated with the company’s own West Coast marketing operations, including Iowa Standard, to establish Standard Oil Company (California). When the enormous New Jersey-based Standard Oil corporation was dissolved by the US Supreme Court in 1911, the California-based company became an independent entity with its own oil fields, pipelines, tankers, refineries, and markets. It became the Standard Oil Company of California, or Socal, in 1926 after acquiring the properties of Pacific Oil Company (formerly owned by Southern Pacific Railroad). Socal became the major oil business in the western United States, with wells and refineries reaching from California to Texas.

After corporate geologists discovered enormous quantities of oil in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia in the early 1930s, Socal embarked on a new period of international expansion. Socal formed the California Arabian Standard Oil Company, or Casoc, in 1933 after signing a concession with the Saudi government. Socal bought the Texas Company (Texaco) in Casoc in 1936, and a combined marketing venture to sell Middle Eastern oil was formed—the Caltex group of enterprises, which Socal and Texaco jointly operate. In 1944, Casoc was renamed the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco), and in 1948, Socal and Texaco sold interests in Aramco to other American oil companies, including Standard Oil of New Jersey (later Exxon Mobil). Socal began operations in Louisiana in 1939, and later expanded to the Gulf of Mexico. Production in Canada began in 1941. Later, subsidiaries and affiliates were established in Libya, Nigeria, Spain, Indonesia, and other locations. Standard Oil Firm (Kentucky) was purchased by the company in 1961 in order to expand its U.S. market region into the southeastern states.

Beginning in 1973, Socal’s Middle East interests were progressively dwindling as Saudi Arabia took control of Aramco, eventually nationalising it in 1980. In 1984, the renamed Chevron Corporation purchased Gulf Oil in one of the largest corporate mergers of its time in order to protect its oil and gas reserves. Chevron now operates in over 90 countries, either directly or through affiliates, as a result of this deal. ChevronTexaco Corporation was formed in 2001 when Chevron purchased Texaco. In 2005, the business renamed itself Chevron Corporation and purchased Unocal, an oil and gas company with large assets in the Gulf of Mexico and Asia. Chevron became the second largest oil firm in the United States (after Exxon Mobil) as a result of these mergers, despite the fact that it only produced about a quarter of its oil and gas in that country.

Several folk clubs thrived in San Francisco throughout the 1950s, including the hungry I where the Kingston Trio made a best-selling live recording in 1958. However, until 1966, when promoters like Bill Graham began booking local bands like the Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, and Big Brother and the Holding Company at the Fillmore Auditorium and other huge dance venues, the city was a backwater of the national music industry.

The rules of live performance were rewritten: guitarists played multi-minute solos, light shows and bare-breasted dancers provided distractions, and audience members dressed as extravagantly as the artists; narcotics were strewn about. The city became a centre of the world’s popular music when the Fillmore West emerged as an internationally renowned venue for acts from Britain and the rest of the United States, thanks to deejays like Tom Donahue (first on Top 40 station KYA and later on the new album-oriented FM stations KMPX and KSAN) and the San Francisco-based Rolling Stone magazine (founded toward the end of 1967).
