Carson Wentz was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, and moved to North Dakota with his family when he was three years old. He was a fullback and defensive back for the Century High School football team in Bismarck, as well as a basketball and baseball player for the Patriots.

Wentz was the backup quarterback to Brock Jensen as a redshirt freshman in 2012, and he appeared in his first college game on September 22.
