NFL football franchise headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Carolina Panthers. Having won two conference titles, the Panthers compete in the NFL’s National Football Conference (NFC) (2003 and 2015).

The Panthers joined the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995 as the league’s first new franchise since 1976. Carolina won seven of their first 16 games to become the most successful expansion franchise in league history. The following year, the club exceeded expectations once again by winning 12 games, making the playoffs, and reaching the NFC title game, where they were defeated by the Green Bay Packers, the eventual Super Bowl champions.

The Panthers, on the other hand, failed to build on their impressive start and finished with losing records in five of the following six years, culminating a terrible one-win season in 2001 that prompted the hiring of new club administration and head coach John Fox.

Carolina’s new management immediately remade the squad into a contender by making a series of player acquisitions. When the Panthers went through the draught in 2001, they selected wide receiver Steve Smith, defensive lineman Kris Jenkins, and second-round pick Julius Peppers at defensive end. After signing quarterback Jake Delhomme before the 2003 season, the Panthers went 11–5 and won the division the next year with their new-look core.

After beating the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round and the St. Louis Rams and Philadelphia Eagles in the conference finals, the Panthers qualified for their second straight Super Bowl. The Panthers lost the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots after a close game was settled by a field goal by the Patriots in the final seconds. Over the next decade, Carolina remained a consistently successful NFL franchise, making two postseason berths in 2005 and 2008.

After the Panthers went 2–14 in 2010, coach Norv Turner was sacked. One good thing came out of the bad season: the Panthers possessed the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL draught, which they utilized to choose Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton from the University of North Carolina.

Newton led the Panthers to a division title and playoff berth in 2013 after a couple of seasons of mediocrity. Carolina went on to win the notoriously weak NFC South division the following year, finishing 7–8–1 overall and divisional champions. Despite this, the squad won its first playoff game before going out in the second round. Despite the Panthers posting one of the best regular-season records in NFL history (15–1) and winning the second conference championship in team history, the team’s season ended in sadness as they lost to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.

The Panthers had a “Super Bowl hangover” the following year, winning just six games and finished last in their division. Last season, the Panthers won 11 games to make the playoffs, but they were upset in the first round. After a promising start, the turnaround was short-lived, as Carolina went on to complete the season 7–9.

As a result of a ruling by the British government, the original Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina, was shut down in 1771. The current Queens College was incorporated in 1857. A branch of the University of North Carolina was built in 1946, Johnson C. Smith University was founded in 1867, King’s College was founded in 1901, and Central Piedmont Community College is located nearby (1963).
