Brian Schatz Wiki/Bio
Brian Schatz, full name Brian Emanuel Schatz, is an American politician who was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate from Hawaii in 2012 and won a special election in 2014.
Schatz was born in Michigan and moved to Hawaii with his family when he was two years old. After graduating from Punahou School, President Barack Obama’s alma mater, he went on to study philosophy at Pomona College in Claremont, California (B.A., 1994). He participated in the study-abroad programme while a student there, attending school in Kenya for a term.
Schatz returned to Hawaii after graduation. He taught at Punahou School before moving on to work for various nonprofit organisations, most notably as CEO (2002–10) of a community-service agency in Honolulu. He ran for and was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 1998, a position he held until 2006.
During this time, he married architect Linda Kwok, with whom he had two children. Following an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 2006, Schatz served as chairman of the Democratic Party of Hawaii (2008–11). He was elected as Hawaii’s lieutenant governor in 2010.
Career
Sen. Daniel Inouye requested that Hawaii’s governor, Neil Abercrombie, appoint Colleen Hanabusa, who was then serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, to his seat before dying of a long illness in 2012. Schatz, who was sworn in on December 27, 2012, was chosen instead by Abercrombie.
After narrowly defeating Hanabusa in the primary, Schatz won a special election in 2014. Schatz earned a reputation as a liberal Democrat in the Senate, voting with his party on most issues. He was particularly interested in alternative and renewable energy, and he was a driving force behind climate change legislation.
He was also involved in initiatives to reduce the cost of higher education and, as a member of the Committee on Indian Affairs, he represented Hawaiian natives’ interests. In the 114th Congress, he was appointed as the top Democrat on the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet, which promoted net neutrality legislation, which requires that all data on the Internet be treated equally.
