Basketball club headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, the Boston Celtics. The Celtics were one of the most successful sports franchises in history, winning 11 of 13 NBA titles from 1957 through 1969. They’ve won 17 NBA championships in all.

The Celtics were founded in 1946 by Walter Brown in Boston and were the first members of the Basketball Association of America, a precursor to the NBA, which was founded in 1946. (established in 1949).

Boston Garden was also overseen by Brown at the time of the team’s creation, and the green-and-white-clad Celtics excelled there until the organization moved to a new arena in 1995–96. Red Auerbach was hired as the team’s head coach in 1950 after a losing record in each of the team’s first four seasons.

Celtics sports dynasty began in the mid-Fifties under Auerbach, who eventually became team general manager and president. The final series against the St. Louis Hawks, which included a double-overtime deciding seventh game, clinched the team’s first championship in the 1956–57 season.

In a lineup that included Frank Ramsey, Ed Macauley, Bill Sharman, Bob Cousy, and Tom Heinsohn, as well as Sam Jones, KC Jones, and John Havlicek, the “Celts” won eight consecutive NBA titles between 1958–59 and 1965–66—a record for the four major North American sports—and triumphed again in 1967–68 and 1968–69.

Post-war television sets helped Boston rise as the sport’s national reputation increased, making the team and their player’s iconic characters. The Celtics’ remarkable NBA finals run included two 40-rebound games by Russell (1960 and 1962) and Havlicek’s series-clinching steal of an inbound pass in game seven of the 1965 Eastern Division playoffs, which elicited the legendary call of “Havlicek snatched the ball!” by announcer Johnny Most.

From 1966 to 1969, Russell served as the Celtics’ player-coach and Wilt Chamberlain was a member of the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers, respectively, in some of the most dramatic NBA playoff games ever.

Although Havlicek was no longer an integral part of Heinsohn’s championship-winning teams in 1973–74 and 1975–76, his contributions were still vital to their success. A triple-overtime victory over the Phoenix Suns in game five of the NBA finals helped the Golden State Warriors win their second championship.

After the NBA refused to allow owner Irv Levin to move the team to his native California, the Celtics were involved in an unusual transaction in 1978. As an alternative, Levin and the owner of the Buffalo Braves, John Y. Brown, exchanged franchises instead.

When they drafted Larry Bird in the NBA draught in the same year, Boston obtained one of NBA history’s best players and possibly the most beloved Celtic of all time. When Magic Johnson and his Lakers faced off against a Celtics squad led by Bob Pettis, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale in the 1980s, NBA fans were captivated by the war for supremacy between the two teams, which went to the NBA finals five times in the 1980s and won three titles.

Boston Celtics Biography/Wiki

The Celtics went six straight seasons without making the playoffs in the mid-1990s, the longest playoff drought in the team’s history. When the Celtics returned to the playoffs, they were routinely eliminated in the first round. As a result of the off-season addition of All-Stars Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to a roster that already had perennial All-Star Paul Pierce, the Celtics went from worst to first in 2007–08 season, finishing with the league’s best record and marking a 42–win improvement.

For the eighth time, they beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA finals and earned their 17th championship in team history. Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship in the 2009–10 season, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in seven games after winning their respective conference championships.

Because of the aging of their seasoned players, the Celtics had less success on the court. In 2012, Allen left the organization in free agency, and the team traded away Garnett and Pierce following the 2012–13 season in order to begin a rebuilding process that would focus on younger players. The Celtics returned to the playoffs in 2014–15 as a result of that effort, considerably sooner than many analysts predicted.

A new point guard in Isaiah Thomas led the team to the best record in the Eastern Conference in 2016–17, making him an All-Star player. After losing four games to one to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the conference finals, the Celtics’ season was over. During the off-season, the Celtics traded Thomas for Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, an All-Star forward.

In the regular season, both players were hampered by significant injuries, but the rest of the young Celtics core exceeded expectations, leading Boston to the second-best record in the Eastern Conference and an unexpectedly long playoff run that ended in a seven-game conference finals loss to the Cavaliers.. The Boston Celtics finished the 2018–19 season with a healthy roster, but they were easily beaten in the second round of the playoffs.
